Check Out Alleen Hughes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alleen Hughes.

Hi Alleen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my taking my photography in the more professional direction in 2015 focusing solely on concerts. After about two years, I got more interested in portraiture work and decided to give weddings a try by assisting a friend of mine with weddings she had booked. I instantly fell in love with it and now, weddings, couples and boudoirs are my main focus with photography. I also work side by side with my husband who does videography for my wedding clients and I enjoy having him as an extension to my business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography always has its ups and downs but like most wedding photographers, I can say the biggest struggle came when Covid hit. With clients postponing left and right, I was scared that my business would not make it through the pandemic shutdowns. Fortunately, I had such amazing clients that stuck with me through it all and my business continues to still grow after it all.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I focus mostly on weddings, couples and boudoir photography. I occasionally will still do family portraits but I generally only offer those in the Fall and Winter months for the holidays since my specialties tend to keep me busy throughout the year.

I’m most proud of how far I have come with starting my business all on my own while raising two children. I used to overwork myself in the very beginning but over time I’ve learned better time management skills to make sure I am always there for my family while also making sure I am available to help my clients whether it’s answering their emails, getting their galleries delivered on time, or answering their phone calls asking for advice regarding their weddings.

I think what sets me apart from others is my editing style. I have a style that is more contrasted and warm but still keeping the true colors there so when my clients print their photos, they have a good pop to them making them stand out and look clean.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice is don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice. This goes not just for photography skills but running your business effectively. This is something I wish I would have done in the beginning but I was always too embarrassed to show my struggles to someone else so now I am always available to help any other photographer whenever they have a question or need some pointers.
