Today we’d like to introduce you to Akeem Williams.
Hi Akeem, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up with a mother who was a surgeon in the Air Force that would eventually become a teacher and a father in the basketball world, I was used to traveling and seeing my parents help others. So it was no wonder I began my life learning and playing the game of basketball at a high level and eventually retiring my jersey but continuing to teach the game to so many others. I now own my own player development company PWR VSN and work for the Los Angeles Lakers. There is a lot to unpack on how I started in the NBA as well as how I began my own company to inspire and teach a wide range of athletes what it takes to become a pro and the amount of work it takes to become better than before..
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe all things come with obstacles and challenges but it’s all ok how you perceive the situation. For me, it was hard initially to start my own company and charge people what I believed my time was worth. And getting into the NBA was less challenging but stepping away and trying to return to the NBA became a battle that took five years to accomplish as I started in 2018 with the Phoenix Suns and now in 2023, just getting back with the Lakers with many interesting experiences and jobs that have prepared and shape my skillset and mind to be here today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As far as PWR VSN goes, I train athletes on and off the court to hear them up mentally& physically to become better people and players. But my job doesn’t stop there like most “trainers” being that I’ve grown in this basketball world from a toddler until now. I have a lifetime of connections and an extensive network to help guys who may be seeking jobs in college, overseas, in the G league, and even NBA. So along with preparing these guys for that next step, I’m able to connect them with opportunities directly and sometimes facilitate them to the people who can help them get these opportunities.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Losing the second-grade spelling bee on the final word “bliss” spelling it “blitz” like the football play. Lol
