Hi Aaron and Mandy, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
We are Aaron and Mandy Dietz, a creative team and married couple that goes by the moniker Dietzworkz. We met in the late 90s on the East Coast and share a career together in advertising that has taken us to San Francisco and beyond. We moved to Palm Springs four years ago, where Aaron has been honing his craft at oil painting. Mandy embroiders, and together, we create works that fuse classical painting techniques with hand-embroidered imagery and text.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some would say working together, living together, and doing artwork together is too much together. We are always looking for ways to balance personal fulfillment and free time with the things we love to do as a couple.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Our work is the result of two brains and four hands, which makes it inherently different than even what we would each do on our own. We don’t always know where each piece will end up. Usually, we plan things out at the outset, choosing subject matter together. Aaron paints on easels that he builds himself. Mandy will doodle around, thinking up ways to alter the piece. Choosing threads that sit back or stand out. Words or elements that add another layer of meaning. We like when there’s a little darkness/edge, even if the overall piece seems bright and fun. We currently have our work for sale at Trevor Wayne’s gallery and store at 901 North Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
We both grew up in Connecticut but didn’t meet until we worked at a small design firm when we were in our 20s. As a kid, Aaron filled the walls of his bedroom with drawings. He majored in graphic design at UCONN. Mandy has always loved puns, poetry, and making things. She used to sell handmade crafts door to door out of a Radio Flyer wagon. She majored in advertising at Emerson College.
