Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Boyd.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Aka w00z and I’m a Barber located in West Los Angeles… as a kid, I was always into fashion, from clothes to shoes and even haircuts. Growing up, my pops always impressed upon me to stay clean and presentable, “you never know whose watching”… Every two weeks, we payed a visit to the barbershop and it was something I always looked forward to. Everything was an interest from the smell of sea breeze, the symmetry of cleanliness and the feeling of a client once they get out of the chair. Those specific memories played a valuable part in where I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was very uncertain When it came to a career I was happy with. Before Barbering, I was in Banking and was destined to move my way up. I realized I was a lot more interested in mastering a trade. I wanted a career where I can control in reference to schedule and profit-wise. Although there were obstacles, I took the risk of going back to school to pursue barbering. I would say one of the most challenging times as a barber has been enduring the inconsistencies that came with Quarantine & COVID. Due to the constant spread and the on and off shop shutdowns, it made it a bit difficult for consistent business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is symmetrical art in a sense. I look at barbering as an artist with fresh canvas. Although it may be blank, the vision is there. From bald fades to combovers to Mohawks and designs— I love to do it all. I’m very attentive to detail, familiar with hair textures and patterns and most importantly very clean and sanitized. It’s more than just a cut, it’s a transition.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I’ve always known I was unique. But like most kids, there were times I didn’t recognize that. I was very creative, athletic, and charismatic. And sometimes misunderstood. As I’ve matured, I realize my creativity is what makes me ME. It’s my brand. And that has influenced my creative expression to this day. Even with my clients, I put my creative viewpoint into every single cut. I was quite the comedian. Everyday I was (still am) determined to make people laugh, especially when they’re having a bad day. That energy was also applied in to my commitment to sports. I ran track, played football, and boxed; but my passion was basketball. I played up until college and fell short from an Achilles injury. Music was another big factor… at the age of seven, I was a street performer at Venice beach with my grandfather. I would dance and reenact popular artists at the time having circles gathered around. It led me to become a unique writer and artist presently.
