Check out Katie De Marzo’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie De Marzo.

Katie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been involved with art in some way or another throughout my life. My mom was an art teacher for many years and my grandparents were artists as well. The need to create is definitely inside of me. When I found Fiber Art, it was more of a fun activity to do with my friend and a glass of wine. We started making wall hangings using yarn and from there I was hooked. I wanted to learn more techniques using different fibers to create, so I began watching tutorials online. It’s taken a while to master certain knots and feel comfortable being more creative with my work. Most of my work has no plan or blueprint when I start. I like to see where it goes and how it turns out naturally.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a fiber artist, working primarily with 100% cotton rope. Macrame is a series of knots creating a pattern throughout the rope. I create several types of macrame pieces, such as, plant hangers, Wall hangings, Wedding backdrops, and most recently, purses. I love making large statement pieces for the walls in people’s homes, adding an element of modern bohemian design. Macrame is such a unique form of artwork. Its texture makes it so unique and interesting. The ability to create different patterns and styles depending on the customers taste and home design is what I love most in the creative process.

Creating something for me is naturally therapeutic and when you are making something with repetition it can be very relaxing. I’ve heard many other fiber artists who crochet or knit say the same thing. I hope people visually enjoy my work and are excited to have a unique piece in their home. Macrame is very nostalgic for many people and I’m so happy that it’s found its way back in style.

Another aspect of my business is teaching what I know. I love holding Macrame Workshops! I’m able to connect with new people and forge lasting friendships. While sipping mimosas and snacking, I share my knowledge and techniques of fiber art. Everyone leaves with a finished wall hanging or plant hanger they made to hang in their home. I’m always so thankful for people who follow my work and want to learn this newly revived art form from me.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
I find that putting myself out there to meet other creative people and networking is very beneficial to my business and creative process. I search for different creative markets and pop up shops to be a part of. Through those experiences I have met some amazing artists and entrepreneurs. Many of these meetings have created lasting friendships and collaborations.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can follow me on Instagram @thecoppernail. Many of my pieces are being sold at a beautiful little boutique in downtown Claremont, which is located just 30 min outside of LA, Ronnie M.
