Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Moret.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a child, I was definitely a ham. I would sing, makeup dances, and perform for the neighbors (whether it be wanted or unwanted). I grew up acting/singing in musicals, choirs, and all things performing arts. When I was 14, I started taking guitar lessons from one of the most amazing teachers and my lifelong friend Eric Stangeland. He taught me how to write a proper song, and I’ve been writing ever since. I’ve always loved performing and never truly considered doing anything else. In 2011, like a lot of creatives, I moved to LA to pursue my dreams. I went to college at AMDA and studied musical theatre. I never wanted to be a Broadway star but I wanted to study acting and singing simultaneously because my love for both was, and still is, a 50/50 split. Since graduating, I’ve released two E.P.’s and a handful of singles.
My first Pop/Singer-Songwriter E.P. was released as Erika Davidson and recorded at Signalflowstudios by my talented friend and producer Mirage Zamprioli (aka Andante). I’ve always loved singing and writing in multiple genres and have struggled categorizing my sound. I decided to say “screw it” and create my own sound with multiple genres. However, one thing you’ll always find in my music is jazz melodies. In the beginning of this year, I changed my artist name to Erika Moret and released my newest E.P. Ambiguity. Ambiguity shows a more vulnerable side and shares my struggles/highlights of being an artist in L.A. My soon-to-be husband, Austen Moret, produced and engineered my E.P. in his Hollywood Studio at Silverside Recording. You can find Ambiguity on all streaming platforms During the pandemic, I’ve been recording new music, working as a voiceover artist, and writing music for sync licensing. I know we are all feeling the wrath of 2020. I can’t wait until this Covid nightmare is over, people are healthy, and we can start up live music again. This E.P. deserves a proper release party.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’m pretty sure Struggling Artist coined its name in L.A. Pursuing what you love in a highly competitive industry is never easy. I’ve definitely received 100 “no’s” for every “yes”. I’ve also never experienced more joy with some of the projects I’ve worked on. If I still love what I’m doing and love myself at the end of the day, the bumps in the road are worth it. If that ever changes, I’ll reconsider, but I am intensely aware of the reality of how hard it can be. I’m here for the long haul. My song Dreaming in Color talks a lot about the fears and struggles of being an artist. I know I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a singer, songwriter, actor, and voice-over artist. I love writing songs in many genres and with sync licensing, I have the freedom to do that, which is a huge plus. My original music is a pop blend infused with jazz and hip-hop production. It’s cinematic and I like to think of it as a smoky, Bond vibe. I’m extremely proud of my latest E.P., Ambiguity because I finally feel like I found my sound as an artist and it’s extremely invigorating. I’m currently recording more music and I can’t wait to share it with the world.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned many things! This year has been one of the hardest I’ve experienced and I know the same goes for many people and it comes in many different forms. From family health scares, to financial scares, to even greater horrors for some people, this year has definitely put a lot into perspective. A lot has been taken away, but it’s also been a daily reminder of how grateful I am for all that I DO have. And one thing I can’t express enough is that we all need to be respectful of one another. So much is at stake, and everyone is going through their own kind of struggle. Wear a mask please.
