An Inspired Chat with Melissa Michels

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Melissa Michels. Check out our conversation below.

Melissa, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I feel I am being called to energy work through music. I was afraid of this before because energy work was so new to me, and I had only thought of energy and spirit and even music in specific ways before. I studied musical theatre in college, and I was very familiar with creating emotion and tapping into the energy of that for the creation of a character. But, I never realized how I could use that process to benefit my own personal daily life and in creating the “character of me.” I have been working on a system that helps me access conscious use of music for shifting energy from negative to positive vibes in a purposeful way. I also have been using music as though it were the soundtrack of my life and rehearsing the emotions I wish to experience more through “musical manifesting.” I feel called to help others with this process, as it has helped me SO much!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Melissa Michels, of “Express YourSELF with Melissa” (expressyourselfwithmelissa.com). I am here to help humans learn to heal and create through music they already love. I am a professional performer, singing/acting/”musical life coach”, and I am finishing up my PhD in Expressive Arts Therapy. I offer private coaching online, and I have just started to introduce new online courses. For the cost of less than one private voice lesson, you can access over 2 hours of training from me in two new courses: “Make Music your Vision Board: The Manifesting Rehearsal” and “Musical Prayers: Musically Connecting to the Divine.”

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child, I believed that life was set by a certain rubric and expectation of how life was going to and “should” unfold. Life itself has broken me over and over and taught me that life is not about the rubric. Life is about what can be created after destruction. I have gone from “Devastated to Dreaming Again” multiple times in my life, and music has been my biggest guide through this process. I am so excited to hope to help others through this same process to help them in their lives.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wounds of my life have been three divorces (two of my own, and one of my parents). I have healed these wounds by finding songs that help me release my trauma, and by finding songs that help me envision and feel the joy of creating more in my life beyond these traumatic events.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
It is my belief that using music in a conscious way can change lives. I have lived through music all of my life, but I have never experienced its power in the way that I have now. I feel I am on a musical mission, and I am determined to help others tap into this energy and power for themselves.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
If I laid down my name, role, and possessions, what would remain is the musical essence of all that I am: the mixtape/playlist of me.
