We recently had the chance to connect with kevin butler and have shared our conversation below.
kevin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Minute 1: “Internal shower” where I chug 32 oz of water.
Minutes 2-20: Sit quietly. Fight the urge to look at my phone.
Minutes 20-30: Coffee. An espresso with a little hot water to make it last longer.
Minutes 30-40: Sit on front porch. Get sun on face
Minutes 40-50: Fight urge to look at my phone again.
Minutes 50-60: Check the waves.
Minutes 60-70: Contemplate having a second coffee, or running, or surfing.
Minutes 70-90: If i haven’t gone for a run or surf, look at phone… regret it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a creative / artist / surf nerd / car aficionado. About 15 years ago I began drawing cars with surfboards on them. It grew and evolved to other surf-inspired creations consisting of about 2000 cars illustrations, exhibitions all over the world and some pretty rad brand collaborations.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That other people knew best.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Trust the process. Trust your instincts. The only way, is through.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I think there used to be. But as I get older, the “public” version is dying a slow death and the real me is all I have energy for.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I am not doing anything with the next 7-10 years in mind. The beauty of what I have created is that it’s mostly for me. It’s what I felt like making in that moment. So if anything pays off in 7-10 years it’ll all be gravy
