An Inspired Chat with Jazz (JazzEra) Cassell of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Jazz (JazzEra) Cassell and have shared our conversation below.

Jazz (JazzEra), really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of building my confidence and proving to myself that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Each time I set a goal and exceed it, my belief in myself grows stronger, and the voice of self-doubt becomes quieter. It’s through these moments that I’ve come to truly understand my capability and resilience.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is JazzEra. I’m a multidisciplinary artist curating immersive experiences that reflect the full spectrum of my creative expression. My work is a direct reflection of my soul’s purpose: to ignite and inspire others to trust, explore, and fully lean into their own creativity.
I am not just one thing, I am everything. A painter, a musician, a creative guide etc. My art is fluid, boundless, and deeply intentional, designed to awaken the creative spirit in everyone who encounters it. Over the past year, I’ve been curating a monthly figure drawing experience called Natural Form. This offering blends traditional figure drawing with a celebration of the everyday muses we encounter in our lives. Each session is an intentional world I build around the muse honoring their individuality, their energy, and who they are on a soul level.
As a Black woman navigating this world, it’s especially important for me to create spaces where Black bodies are seen, respected, and uplifted. Too often, we are oversexualized, objectified, or dismissed. Natural Form is my way of giving us our flowers in real time reclaiming the gaze, and reframing the narrative,

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe that being unauthentic to yourself ultimately fractures the bonds you have with others. When you try to be something you’re not or fall into people-pleasing tendencies you deny who you are on a soul level. And in doing so, you also deny yourself the opportunity to connect with others in a real, meaningful way.
The remedy is choosing to show up as your most sincere, unapologetic self. It takes unlearning who we were told to be and relearning who we truly are. Only then can genuine connection flourish and real bonds be formed.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is a state of mind. Like most things in life, what you choose to give your energy to is what manifests. In the times I’ve experienced deep suffering, I now recognize that I was often choosing to see the worst-case scenario, accepting a false reality as truth. It was an illusion of the mind, one that kept me stuck in a loop of fear and limitation. Breaking that cycle is an everyday choice. And in doing so, I’ve learned that I am far more powerful than I often give myself credit for. My perspective shapes my reality and reclaiming that power has changed everything for me.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the art world tells itself is that an artist’s worth is measured by their follower count or how many views a post gets.
I’ve had to unlearn that mindset and detach from the pressure of constant validation. Instead, I focus on creating what brings me joy work that’s true to my artistry, whether it’s seen by 200 people or just 20. Because when I show up authentically, I trust that my work will find its way into the hands and hearts of those it’s meant to reach. And that’s more valuable than any algorithm could ever measure.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I hope people say I gave them space to show up as their authentic selves without judgment, without ridicule. That I communicated with kindness, offered grace when it was needed most, and held space with intention. I hope they say I inspired them to reach their creative potential, to laugh more freely, and to believe in the beauty of their own path. That I was a mirror reflecting back the endless possibilities life has to offer.
