We recently had the chance to connect with Brockstar and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Brockstar, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Often times working with clients things change in moments. I’m often the one to jump on a project after the first call of the specifics but recently I’ve learned its best to just wait until everything is confirmed to start souring materials and supplies.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Art and design has been an important part of my life and I am overjoyed and sometime tortured that it is my full time reality. I’ve been working creatively for as long as I can remember but those doodles and small sewing projects have lead me to pursue art as a career first in attending art school and then after graduation moving to Los Angeles to continue working professionally. Since moving to Los Angeles roughly 10 years ago, I’ve learned that I can view art and express myself in a variety of ways. I am a long standing resident of Koreatown and I’m so fortunate that I’ve been able to cultivate community here through hosting/MC the party HotpotKtown a queer bipoc centered events that happen only in koreatown Los Angeles. This has brought me the gift to be not only a voice in the physical space but a leader in my in my local community. As a designer, I’ve grown so much in that last few years expanding my business from garments to accessories and prop building. I’ve been fortunate to create props for many Television shows, movies and celebrity talent. My specialities include processes like 3D design and printing as well as crystal rhinestone embellishments, giving all my clients the “Star Treatment”. I’ve also found joy in content creation, sharing my process with my community through social media.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Miscommunication and inauthenticity often breaks bonds. Restoration is a process but it takes time, honesty, open dialog and authenticity to build them.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I’ve learned it’s truly not about how you fall but how you rise. Learning that failures aren’t failures but instead valuable lessons has been instrumental in my practice and life.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
It depends where I am viewed. I believe spending time with me is learning who I truly am, even if that’s on a live stream. I believe in living authentically because it’s the best way to connect with people, sometimes even the messy parts and it’s much easier than keeping up a lie.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing my best to become my best self and that’s what I was born to do. Everything else is attributes and titles given to help better understand me.
