Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Meyer & Brandon White
Hi Meredith & Brandon , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Easy Dreams actually started in New York, and moved out west to LA in 2019. We (Meredith and Brandon ) met in a mile long bathroom line at a DIY show. We were reminiscing about the country music we both grew up with, and decided to get together to write some songs. Then the cops broke up the party, but we miraculously stuck to the plan, met up, and this whole thing started. After playing around in New York for a couple of years, we decided to move west for a change of pace and new inspiration.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The creative process itself is probably the smoothest part of the road. The spark we find in writing and recording is always there.
In terms of struggles, what we’ve struggled with is really no different than what everyone has struggled with in the 2020s. The pandemic was tough, the economy got weird, and there was a general sense of fear in the air. We lost a lot of great businesses as a community, and music venues struggled. Rents went up and wages went down. Our personal struggles have been affected by all of these factors. But as the world has opened up, we feel increasingly thankful that the community has not given up. If anything, it just feels good to be a part of it, and we’re glad to be here in LA, where everyone and their grandma has a passion for art.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our band Easy Dreams is centered around the sound of our voices harmonizing. Like most artists, we peek into the world and try to make sense of it through what we come up with. Genre-wise, we used to call our sound “Twang Peaks”- all analog synths and dreamy spooky guitars. Then we started playing with a bruising rhythm section and got into more big rock-n-roll with a taste of psych. Our debut album ‘Sunformer’ showcases all of this.
Now, somehow all of these different phases of our sound have coalesced into something new again. It’s so damn pretty out here that we end up being drawn to prettier sounds and dreamier layers in our production, so our next album is leaning in this direction. Melody is king in Los Angeles!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Show up and be there for other people! Go to new places, see other shows, stay open to learning new things. Our world is very insular and it’s easy to stay isolated. It’s almost a revolutionary act these days to consistently go to other peoples’ shows/openings and hang around. Just be there, and you’ll be surprised what you can discover in your neighborhood and beyond. It’s all in the discovery.
As far as finding a mentor, be open to talking to the person next to you. Don’t ever become so much of an expert that you can’t learn something new from anyone in the room. We’ve all lived full lives and have had to adapt to wildly different circumstances. Every person has mastered some kind of knowledge at this point in their lives, and can offer some kind of wisdom. Just be open to starting a conversation. You never know what chance occurrence will make a huge impact on your life. The big swings in your life can hinge on the most random moments, so don’t be so fixated on the outcome… just let those moments in.
