Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Mickelsen
Hi Kristy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well my name is Kristy Mickelsen I am a book author, advocate and podcast host whose passions include my two autistic children, reading and writing. I was born in Upland California and raised in Riverside by my two wonderful parents Dale and Reata. I eventually moved to the high desert of California where I graduated Junior college with my Associate of Science Degree with a major in Child Development and began teaching as a state Preschool Teacher for children with special needs. I worked in the field for seven years as a preschool teacher, earning my Site Supervisor Credentials for children ages 4-5 years old. But due to illness, I retired from working with children in 2017, and tried my hand at writing especially after my autistic son dared me to follow my dreams of writing professionally. I expanded my writing career by using stories to advocate for causes such as cancer, autism and lupus awareness among other important topics as these same topics have touched my life in various ways.
In 2021 I found a love for audio work and podcasting after being a guest on The Billy Dees Podcast and explored my options in the audio world by becoming a Twitter Spaces host and then starting my own Podcast, with the help and encouragement of Billy Dees. Since the beginning of my writing and audio career I have wrote many articles for blogs, as well as my books, guest spoke on many podcasts, appeared on Kamar 4 News, have done 3 mini book tours, and won 4 awards for my Podcasts and books, such as an award of Excellence from the 30th Annual communicator award based in New York, A Platinum Award for her literary works, and 2 gold awards for my work as the host of the W.W.A.A. Podcast where people fell in love with My Advocacy work and the slogan ” Be the Voice, Be the Change, Be the One to Make a Difference.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say a smooth road that’s for sure. Creating your on path to success is definitely a hard task to take on and there is definitely bumps along the way.
For example as an author you don’t just get to write a story and move on to the next! You have to learn how to market and promote that book and yourself as well as learn how to gain publicity and build a fan base. It’s actually a lot of hard behind the scenes that most people don’t get a chance to see.
Plus there is a lot of business stuff you need to learn a long the way. It’s definitely a long toad to travel down but often very rewarding as well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well as I said before I am author, advocate for causes such as cancer, autism and lupus awareness as well as a podcast host. Many people know me as the host of the W.W.A.A. Podcast. I have a mix of wonderful guests and topics that really resonate with the audience.
I think what sets me apart from other Authors is my charity work in my community and other states. I believe that I have been very blessed along my career journey and doing charity and community work is one way I can pay it forward.
For example during the month of December I host a Christmas Party for my state’s local nursing homes. I believe our senior citizens deserve a wonderful holiday season and I love bringing them gifts, singing books and bringing decorations for the nursing home to help them celebrate the Christmas Season.
In September of 2025 I will be holding a Suicide Prevention Fundraiser with live entertainment in the State of New Jersey to Raise Funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I love doing Charity work as much as possible and I think that helps set me apart. These are also causes that are close to my heart.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Well truthfully the best advice I can give about finding a mentor and what has worked well for me is by watching and learning from those who have come before me in my craft. I research them and i take tidbits on what has helped them along the way. However, i also listen to any and all advice given and then choose if any of those words of wisdom will be of use to my work or situations. I am a firm believer that we are always learning and growing so why not consider the advice from others, but only after careful consideration.
