Meet Beth Whitlinger of Beth Whitlinger Interior Design in Foothill Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Whitlinger.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While studying studio art at Pitzer College in Claremont, California in the late 70’s with thoughts of being a high school art teacher, I quickly realized that my passion lay in structure, form, and the manipulation of space. I happened on an Architecture class while attending summer school at Cal State Long Beach and was lost forever to the world of buildings and design.

The next semester I transferred to the newly formed Department of Design Sciences at the Arizona State University College of Architecture, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Interior Design and Business Administration in 1982. My first job after college was for a boutique design firm in Scottsdale, Arizona working on high-end residential interiors and model homes.

Several years later, I impetuously decided to pack up and move to Hawaii. I worked for two different design firms during my time in the islands, one on Maui and the other on Oahu, soaking up the island vibe and laid back lifestyle. Eventually I got “rock fever” and returned to Los Angeles. Working for a commercial design firm in LA, I encountered all manner of projects from corporate to government, and even the myriad of offices at Disneyland. In 1994, I took the leap to start my own firm.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Well… My journey has been exciting but not always smooth. Entrepreneurship has its ups and downs. There are many things they don’t teach you in school. Until you encounter a problem, you have no idea. Freight damage, vendors going out of business, client personalities, marketing, insurance… I look at challenges as learning experiences which only make me stronger, both as a human, as well as a business woman.

Beth Whitlinger Interior Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BWID is a luxury interior design firm dedicated to “future proofing” interior environments. We use classic details and an abundance of texture to help create a feeling of relaxation the minute you walk in the door. We respect our client’s time and money, coordinate everything and act as their “interior concierge” to make their home reflect their personality and lifestyle.

My specialty is a calm, methodical, and process-oriented approach working through challenges in a proactive way, which delivers a drama-free experience. It’s always somewhat stressful to have your home under construction and having a flexible and organized designer makes the process as smooth as possible.

Being experienced in a wide breadth of styles, from traditional to contemporary, allows me to create an interesting, inviting, and curated look. I often blend styles and take a more architectural approach to interior spaces, which helps to create a more classic interior. My goal is to make our client’s home lovely, comfortable, and timeless; a luxury retreat of which they can be proud.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe that true success is measured by the people you affect. I strive for excellence and am always looking to make our clients not only happy with the end result, but “over the moon”. Client referrals are the best markers of success; when our clients recommend our services to their friends and relatives, then I know have achieved my goal.
