Community Highlights: Meet Sarah Rafik Botrus of Lux Psychotherapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Rafik Botrus

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and supervisor (LMFT 133076) in private practice. My journey to becoming a therapist has been an evolution of my lifelong curiosity about people—their thoughts, motivations, and stories. Initially, I didn’t start out in the therapy field; I pursued a career in film. I studied at UCLA’s film school, where I developed a deep appreciation for storytelling and worked in the industry as a camera assistant and line producer for about two years. I loved the collaborative, close-knit community that the industry offered, but the pace was intense, and the long, 80-hour weeks eventually led to burnout.

After stepping back, I realized that my fascination with storytelling and human connection translated beautifully into the world of therapy. So, I pivoted and pursued a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, diving into clinical training across several settings—first in training clinics and group practices, and eventually establishing my own private practice.

In many ways, the skills I honed in film—empathy, perspective-taking, and a sensitivity to the nuances in people’s stories—are central to my work as a therapist. Working with creative individuals, especially filmmakers, has been particularly meaningful because I understand the world they come from and the unique pressures they face. It’s a privilege to hold space for others, listen to their stories, and help them navigate the complexities of their lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly hasn’t been entirely smooth—it’s been more of a winding path with important turning points and learning moments. One of the bigger challenges has been truly understanding my path and clarifying who I want to work with as a therapist. In the beginning, there was a lot of exploration, and it took time and experience in various settings to recognize that I felt most fulfilled working with creative individuals. That process required patience and trust in my instincts, as I navigated my way toward my ideal clientele.

Another significant challenge was making the leap to private practice. Transitioning from the structure of clinics and group practices to being fully independent was both thrilling and daunting. Private practice comes with its own set of challenges—everything from managing the business side to building a steady caseload. Going out on my own meant putting myself out there in new ways and learning to balance the demands of being both a therapist and a business owner. But ultimately, every struggle has strengthened my ability to serve my clients, and I’m thankful for the growth these experiences have brought me.

We’ve been impressed with Lux Psychotherapy , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Lux Psychotherapy, my practice is built around a deep commitment to understanding and supporting creative individuals who often face unique emotional and psychological challenges. Many of my clients struggle with imposter syndrome, feeling like they see the world differently, or becoming overwhelmed by the demands of their creative lives. Additionally, I work closely with individuals dealing with borderline personality disorder and depression, offering a safe, supportive space where they can work through these complexities.

My therapeutic approach combines psychodynamic techniques, restoration therapy, and mentalizing modalities, allowing me to help clients explore and better understand the roots of their behaviors, thought patterns, and emotional responses. One area I focus on is the emotional component of procrastination, recognizing that it’s often not a matter of willpower but a deeply rooted issue that requires a compassionate, nuanced approach.

What sets Lux Psychotherapy apart is the atmosphere I cultivate with my clients—warm, relaxed, and even humorous when appropriate. I believe in making therapy a space where clients feel safe to be vulnerable, allowing true healing and growth to occur. Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the strong connections I’ve built with clients, who feel seen, understood, and empowered in their work with me. For anyone considering therapy, Lux Psychotherapy offers a unique, empathetic approach, particularly for those in creative fields who may feel that their struggles are misunderstood elsewhere.

What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, I’m excited to expand Lux Psychotherapy’s offerings in ways that support and engage the creative community even more deeply. In Spring 2025, I plan to launch online classes specifically for creative individuals who struggle with procrastination and want to gain a clearer understanding of their unique creative voices. These classes will provide tools for overcoming self-doubt and navigating the emotional barriers that can often hinder creative flow, making them accessible to anyone, anywhere.
