Hi Nikia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began over two decades ago in the hair industry, where I initially started working with renowned brands like Bobbi Boss Extensions. However, I saw a significant gap in the market for African American women, particularly when it came to creating a private and professional space for them to purchase high-quality hairpieces. With this mission, I founded Intriguing Hair to serve women who wanted high-quality, human hair extensions, hairpieces, and wigs. I drew on my experiences working for Sara Deutsch, an icon in hair replacement, and my passion for artificial hair integration and non-surgical hair replacement.

Over the years, my business grew to serve not only African American women but also women experiencing medical hair loss and trans women, all of whom often felt alienated from traditional hair experiences. Through perseverance, understanding my audience, and constantly innovating, I expanded the brand to become a one-stop solution for hair augmentation needs, earning recognition and respect within the community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and there were definitely challenges along the way. One of the early struggles I faced was being a new entrepreneur in an industry dominated by long-established players. Building credibility and gaining the trust of customers was a gradual process. I started with an initial investment of $25,000, which meant every decision was crucial for the business’s survival. Cash flow management was another challenge, as inventory demands and scaling operations required more capital.

As the business grew, balancing quality and affordability became a key hurdle, especially when creating collections like the more affordable hair extensions for Intriguing Hair. Maintaining the same level of quality while offering different price points required strategic planning and a deep understanding of both the market and my customer base.

Another significant struggle was ensuring that the brand remained inclusive. I was dedicated to creating a welcoming space not just for African American women but also for women dealing with medical hair loss and the transgender community. This commitment required sensitivity, understanding, and consistent communication to ensure that all customers felt seen and respected.

Additionally, navigating wholesale partnerships and connecting with retail buyers introduced new challenges. Breaking into major retail chains like Ulta Beauty has been a goal, but the process of building relationships, understanding retail requirements, and positioning the brand effectively was (and still is) an ongoing learning experience.

On top of that, managing the financial side of the business, like securing loans and grants, keeping the inventory healthy, and ensuring cash flow stability, required constant attention and strategic planning. Despite these obstacles, persistence, support from mentors, and my drive to create a professional and empowering experience for my customers kept me moving forward.

At Intriguing Hair, we specialize in providing high-quality human hair extensions, wigs, and hairpieces that are ethically sourced. What separates us from others is our commitment to purity; our hair is never mixed with synthetic fibers or animal hairs. This dedication to quality has earned us a strong reputation in the industry. Beyond serving individual clients, we also have the ability to partner with theater production companies and movie sets to bring films to life through our meticulously crafted hairpieces.

Additionally, we offer private label services for salon owners and beauty supply retailers, enabling them to create their own custom-branded hair extensions, wigs, and hairpieces. This allows our partners to expand their offerings with the same high-quality, ethically sourced products that we’re known for.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Good luck has definitely played a role in my life and business, particularly in terms of the incredible mentors I’ve had along the way. I’ve been fortunate to connect with experienced and knowledgeable individuals who not only guided me but also believed in my vision. They provided valuable insights and advice that helped me avoid common pitfalls and recognize opportunities. Their support and wisdom have been instrumental in shaping my approach to business and driving Intriguing Hair’s growth. I consider these connections and experiences to be a significant part of my journey and success.
