Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Brooke Roberts
Hi Ashley Brooke, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a comedian originally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I came to Los Angeles via New York at the end of 2021. I arrived with my betrothed just in time for omicron which I would rate two cat paws down.
I moved to NYC right out of college and lived there for roughly 13 years. New York gave me a lot of things: a healthy fear of bed bugs, a deep appreciation for Xi’an Famous Foods, and lots of incredible memories that are starting to get blurry and blend together as I age.
Most importantly, the city introduced me to the baddest bitch of all: free open mics. I accidentally started stand up in NYC and then committed my life to it. And now I can never quit or else. I love performing in New York and the comedy community there. And I met my espoused while bouncing around from show to show, so that is another reason why I support people leaving their sleepy little towns and living the artist life (angry, young, poor).
During the pandemic (boo, hiss), the show I was writing for was canceled and my one-and-only got a job offer in Los Angeles. DOGE coin was shooting through the roof, and I was sitting on a plump bottom due to the famous COVID-fifteen. In other words, all signs pointed to Hollywood. So, we packed up our Volvo, drugged our cat (with pills from the vet, geez), and took a tour of this great country’s La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham. After about a week of wondering which one of us was responsible for the smell (you’ll never guess), we arrived in Los Angeles clueless and confused, just as our forefathers intended.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road is covered in a mysterious, thick mist. As the mist rolls in, it brings with it terrifying, otherworldly creatures, and I, and a group of strangers, have become trapped in a supermarket, struggling to survive both the creatures and the increasing tension among us. The road is a suspenseful, eerie atmosphere that is easily one of King’s most memorable works.
Can I be honest? I have mixed feelings about living in Los Angeles!! Please don’t ask me to leave the interview, I need this, desperately. But truthfully, the road has been weird. On the one hand, the quality of life, and my apartment here, is way better than the condemned building I lived in in Bushwick, Brooklyn. But on the other hand, I didn’t want to spend any time in that hell hole, so I was always out! Living my life, living the dream, living to live, etc. etc.
In LA, I always want to stay in. It’s soooo cozy. You should see my place; I can’t believe a one-bedroom apartment could be so inviting. Why would I leave!!! And that, dear reader, is where the problem begins. It’s hard to depart my snug-as-a-bug abode. I guess one could say it’s a double-edged coin. Or a sword with two sides. The point is: there is no peace in this life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a comedian, I tell lies on stage. Sometimes they are true. No one knows but me!!! But seriously, I have never lied once on stage.
In addition to performing, I write all sorts of stuff and sometimes people read it. I have written for television, radio, blogs, newspapers, streaming services, book anthologies, college textbooks, deeply private journal entries, unsent letters to my enemies, and, most importantly, podcasts. They are the whale of the future.
Earlier this year, Meet Cute, a podcasting/entertainment company, allowed me to write a six-part romantasy for their network called, A Prophecy of Incense and Snow. Finally, with this story I was able to combine my favorite things: magic, social justice, and heavy petting.
Additionally, I am very much online. Please follow me. I may disappear for a bit, but I always come back.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My biggest networking opportunity here was when I was chosen to be a part of a nine-month fellowship called the Climate Comedy Cohort. It was co-created and directed by Generation180 and the Center for Media & Social Impact’s GoodLaugh and our group was made up of nine comedians from across the country, and five of those nine currently live in Los Angeles! So that helped me make new friends while we finally solve the climate crisis.
As far as a mentor goes, I would like a mentor. Send me a mentor.
