Life & Work with Andrew Stewart of Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Stewart

Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I lived in Kazakhstan when I was a child and attended an international school with kids from all over the world, so having been exposed to many different cultures at a young age I’ve carried a lot of curiosity with me throughout my life. That translated to creativity and art taking precedence over other things very early on. I was a competitive choral singer and soloist, and studied opera performance in college before moving to Los Angeles to pursue music in the film industry. I was working at a major studio in Santa Monica, and I absolutely loved LA when I arrived, but the transition to life here was extremely difficult and I didn’t really feel that the film industry served my creativity. I started hiking a lot and taking a lot of photos in nature to help me focus on my mental health. I ended up developing a decent following on Instagram and working as an influencer with Adidas Terrex, which led to my first agency job and is, essentially, how I began my career in digital marketing. Now I work as a Director of Digital Marketing at a large portfolio of brands.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I didn’t really have any external support. I moved to Los Angeles because there were very few opportunities where I lived in North Carolina. I just packed up everything I had and moved here with a very short-term plan. There were years were I was working, seemingly, non-stop and felt very stuck. Los Angeles is an amazing city to live in but if you have no time and haven’t started making money yet, you tend to miss out on a lot of the fun parts of it. I woke up every day feeling like I was accomplishing something, but it took a long time to really feel like I had found the right path.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
People often say that my work history is very interesting. I’ve never really had a clear path, and while sometimes that might be interpreted as a fault, I’ve actually found that Los Angeles is the perfect place for people like myself. There are so many things to try, and it’s been pretty easy for me to find the things that I like and gravitate closer to them. I started my career working in social media content creation when Instagram was really beginning to take hold, then started managing social media accounts, influencer management. I’ve worked in marketing operations, email management, content experimentation. The list goes on. I was lucky enough to have a background that allowed me to transition into paid digital advertising at the exact time it was becoming paramount in direct to consumer business models, and that’s where I really thrived. It gave me a real perspective into the depths of how businesses function and what’s needed to make a business profitable, scalable, and successful. Now, after becoming an expert in the performance marketing space alongside having a diverse background in digital marketing, I have a foundation of skills that have allowed me to become a leader in digital marketing. I am currently responsible for six brands and their paid, earned, and owned channels.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Having financial literacy and security, while also having the time to do things you love, see the people you love, and take care of yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically.
