Inspiring Conversations with Krystle & Bethany Whitley of Sister Blooms

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Krystle and Bethany Whitley.

Hi, Krystle and Bethany! We’d love for you to start by introducing yourselves.

Hi! We’re the sisters behind Sister Blooms, a Black-owned floral company based in Los Angeles. Together, we strive to uplift and inspire others by offering stunning floral arrangements for any occasion.

Sister Blooms was founded on the pillars of creativity, resilience, and sisterhood. Growing up in Washington, D.C., our mother had a remarkable gift for making every moment feel special, whether it was a birthday, a dance recital, or just an ordinary day. Her magical ability to infuse joy and meaning into even the smallest snapshots inspired our passion for creating memorable experiences.

After graduating college, we moved to Los Angeles, diving into the vibrant worlds of dance, music, film, and television. We thrived in our creative pursuits, and throughout our journeys, flowers were in the backdrop, enhancing every phase along the way. Then came the pandemic, a time that forced us to turn inward and seek solace and happiness in our homes.

KRYSTLE: After a long uncertain night, I sat in my room, my mind buzzing with possibilities. At that moment, I had an epiphany and turned to Google, typing: “How do you start an event planning company with zero dollars?” To my surprise, the answer was simple: florals. That revelation incited the creation of Sister Blooms. I began experimenting with different floral styles and color stories, striving to create professional-looking arrangements. As I captured photos, hoping to evolve this passion into something more substantial, I couldn’t ignore the reality…I was spending money I didn’t have. Realizing I needed to recoup my expenses, the drive within me, combined with my sister’s advice, transformed this hobby into a full-fledged business.

BETHANY: “Why don’t you post the arrangements on your Instagram story and say… ‘leftover florals from a photoshoot’ and offer them 50% off?”

KRYSTLE: That moment marked the start of her role as Co-Founder. By the next morning, I was flooded with DMs from eager buyers. Demand surged so rapidly that we had to make a second trip to the flower market to keep up. Since that day, January 26, 2021, we haven’t stopped adorning doorsteps and venues with our floral creations.

What started as a simple Google search quickly blossomed into a heartfelt endeavor. We discovered that our knack for visual storytelling, honed through years in entertainment, translated beautifully to floral design. Flowers have always decorated our lives, symbolizing celebration and connection, and now they serve as the cornerstone of our business.

BETHANY: Our background in the entertainment industry played an instrumental role in our growth. With experience in talent management, I was able to leverage those connections to attract high-profile clients at top agencies. Word spread quickly about our work, and before we knew it, we were designing florals for A-list celebrities, major events, and exclusive brands.

As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain steadfast in our core mission: to craft floral experiences that elevate every occasion and leave a lasting impression. For us, it’s not just about the flowers. It’s about the experiences they create, the emotions they evoke, and the memories they help to commemorate.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

KRYSTLE: While Sister Blooms came together organically, it was far from obstacle-free. Our story began long before flowers entered the picture, with a pivotal moment in 2017 when I was diagnosed with a severe autoimmune disease. This condition brought chronic pain and limited my mobility, turning daily tasks into monumental struggles. Each day felt like an uphill battle, as the pain and limitations tested my strength in ways I never imagined. But within that struggle, a deep, unshakable determination began to rise. The pain sparked a fire within me, pushing me forward on my hardest days. That fire became my drive, ultimately leading to the creation of Sister Blooms. Despite the physical toll, arranging flowers became my lifeline—a small victory with every order, a reminder that beauty can emerge even in the face of adversity.

During the uncertainty of COVID-19, arranging flowers provided me with healing and reignited my sense of purpose. It gave me the opportunity to reclaim my story, shifting my focus to what I was still capable of achieving. The early days were tough. What began as a hobby in our living room, quickly turned into sleepless nights filled with doubt and shared struggle. We learned floral design through YouTube tutorials, hustled to keep every arrangement fresh, and improvised without a proper refrigerator. But despite the challenges, seeing the joy we brought to our clients made every sacrifice worthwhile.

Running a family business as sisters under one roof during a global pandemic hasn’t been easy, but it’s only strengthened our bond. Whenever one of us encountered a setback, the other was there to lift her up. Together, we’ve accomplished things we never thought possible—from creating floral designs for venues like SoFi Stadium to collaborating with brands like Vogue, Balenciaga, Meta, Fenty Hair, and Billboard. Every arrangement we create carries a piece of our journey. Sister Blooms is a testament to the power of resilience, proving that with passion and persistence, anything is possible.

Great! So, let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

At Sister Blooms, we pride ourselves on our ability to bring our client’s creative visions to life with florals that elevate the atmosphere. While we do provide single-order arrangements, our true specialty lies in decorating events. What sets us apart is our artistry in producing top-notch designs, no matter the budget. Like an artist who blends high-end items with thrifted finds, we use a detailed eye to curate arrangements that exude luxury without compromise. This dedication to quality and creativity enables us to design pieces that resonate deeply with our clients, enhancing their most cherished moments. With each petal and bloom, we are passionate creators and storytellers.

Any big plans?

In addition to providing florals for a range of events, we are focused on building a lasting brand by partnering with hotels and restaurants that share our vision. We believe these spaces play a vital role in cultivating a creative environment where people can gather and connect. Through collaborations with like-minded establishments, we look forward to contributing our displays to enhance the overall guest experience.

Beyond our work in the hospitality industry, we are deeply committed to empowering young people from underserved communities who often lack access to opportunities in the arts. We believe that creativity has the power to transform lives. Through our outreach programs, we will offer hands-on enrichment opportunities—including workshops, mentorship, and creative spaces—that enable young people to explore their artistic talents and pursue their dreams. By equipping them with the tools, guidance, and support they need, we can unlock pathways for personal growth and self-discovery.
