Rising Stars: Meet Katherine Garratt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Garratt

Hi Katherine , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After receiving my BFA in Visual Art at York University in Toronto, Canada, I had my first solo exhibition “Out Of The Cradle Endlessly Rocking,” at Founders Gallery in Toronto. I had developed my own style of painting with acrylics on canvas and my show was well received.

My work at York University, gave me the necessary foundation to continue with my artistic pursuits throughout my life. Although I have had to work in other areas to support my artistic career at times, I have always managed to maintain my focus on making art a priority.

I have exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout my life and I am presently represented by Nomad Gallery in White Rock, BC. My recent solo exhibition “The Golden Age,”draws inspiration from the world wide myth of paradise.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would certainly have to say that my artistic journey has not been easy, but I have always persisted to work in my field. I think that is the crucial element of being an artist. If you love to make art, you will find a way to make it

I have always put my artistic career first, even though I have certainly had to make money in other ways at different times. The key is to face the challenges with grace and to have faith in your ability to create art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a visual artist and I work with acrylic paint on canvas. I am inspired by world mythology primarily. My recent solo exhibition, “ The Golden Age,” expresses my interest in the myth of paradise. Many cultures describe a mythological land where human beings are immortal and live peacefully with nature. Some examples include: Elysium, Avalon, Dilmun, Shangri-La, Aaru, Kunlun, and TirNaNog.

In my paintings, I create an imaginary paradisiacal realm while attempting to illustrate a mutualistic relationship between human life and nature rather than a competitive one.

What matters most to you? Why?
I am primarily concerned about climate change on our planet and how this is affecting the earth in dramatic ways. I believe that human beings should take care of the planet in an appropriate way. I think that we should be more respectful of nature and make sure that we protect the many different species on earth.

In my paintings, I try to express how the relationship between nature and human beings can be amicable.
