Life & Work with Kaylie Flowers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylie Flowers. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not. I think my biggest struggle is mental health. Trying to remain positive and motivated as costs rise and bookings just don’t come my way. I am putting myself out there to practice so much and take the classes but it is so hard to think you are enough. I’d also like to add the self criticism and imposter syndrome is easy to fall prey too because the comparing to others does not stop. I would recommend to invest in good friendships and a good therpist if you’re looking for a career in entertainment.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an actor, mostly, however I have written and directed a few plays during my college and High School career. I recently just shot an Alien sci-fi that was a lot of fun and I can’t wait for it to come out. Honestly, one thing I am most proud of is my reel. My friends were kind enough to help me light, mic, and film a couple scenes that I wrote to show off my range. A bit more about me, I am mostly known for theatre and film as it is my passion and drive-which I believe also sets me apart from others. I am so active in trying to work that I am constantly trying to creative and be productive. Especially when my friends are involved.
I am also a vocalist – it’s official I can say that now! And it’s a new creative journey I’m on in the musical theatre realm.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I really liked “Actors Guide ” by Jenna Fisher. It has helped me a lot and motivated me to keep going even when it seems hopeless. Also “Fleabag” by Phoebe Waller Bridge. I really admire good writing and the lust for finding purpose in creativity. Sofia Coppola’s Archive is also big inspiration so going through her book and looking at the pictures from set ignites a fire in me to do the same. I also look to Drew Afualo who “take no sh-t” attitude helps me when it comes to accepting nothing less than the life I deserve- her book “Loud” helps motivate me as an AAPI woman. I also love to watch movies. I know that sounds lame, but I love to watch good acting and see how movies are put together. My favorite actors to watch are Andrew Scott ( my favorite is Sherlock that’s how long I’ve been a fan for), Florence Pugh, Saoirse Ronan, and De’vine Joy Randolph. My favorite films this year are “Sing Sing”, “Challengers” and “The Substance” and soon to be “We Live in Time”. These films to me is what Acting and film making is all about.
