Today we’d like to introduce you to Rubina John.
Rubina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since the day, I remembered myself I was deeply in love with art like drawing, designing and in meantime I loved baking, so all my dolly play stories end up in designing, making dresses, arranging fashion shows and making different stuff with play dough for my dollies, but the best part was celebrating their parties so I could bake little cakes and decorate them with my mother. This was the start of my great passion for baking and designing cakes. The first character designed cake which I made was for my cousin’s dog Black’s first birthday which I made a dog face for him! At that time, I was only 10 years old! I should admit that courage of my family took a big part in my cake fantasy world. After that, I was doing all the cakes for our family and friends celebrations. Later when I was around 14 I have been asked to make a Donald Duck shape cake for my first client and I will never forget my excitement!
Then, although my love, passion, and desire was in art but due to some situation I was obliged to study business administration and accounting, yet something was missing for me and always I was looking to find the opportunity to study art, and I never stay away from it and never stopped decorating and making cakes for clients and family.
Later, I managed to attend the College of Fine Arts, and also I studied the business of Cake Decorating and the Art of Sculpting.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge was creating new recipes to satisfy my new clients, since, in my hometown, they had totally different taste both in design and flavor. It took me a while to create my collection of yummy recipes which now my customers can enjoy the taste.
For a while, I was a home baker with a small kitchen and little space to work and create my cakes and also, I was renting a commercial kitchen with high hourly rent, but I think all these makes me what I am now!
Please tell us about Deja Vu Cakes.
First, let me explain why we choose the name of Deja Vu cakes for our business!
After designing my customer’s special event cakes from their ideas and then creating the cakes, when they see the cake usually the first thing I hear is Wawoo I have seen this before! Deja Vu!
Our cakes and cupcakes are all from scratch and as we say we bake like our grandmothers, we break the eggs and we make the cake! Our frostings taste so good and we get lots of compliments about it because it’s not over sweet and it has just the right amount of sweetness so you can taste the flavor of the frosting not only sugar. Also, we don’t use any kind of artificial preservatives.
We can turn our customers’ imaginations to an edible art!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood is playing Barbies with my cousin and making little cake from playdough for their birthdays and weddings!
Also, my other favorite memory is baking cakes with my mother.
