Inspiring Conversations with Hye Yun of Yuna lactation & Wellness Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hye Yun

Hi Hye Yun, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was shocked by the lack of postpartum support in the U.S. compared to what I was accustomed to in S.Korea. Unlike S, Korea, where postpartum care centers and lactation massages are standard, such services are not readily available in the U.S. Every time I heard from friends who had already given birth about the difficulties of breastfeeding and the importance of postpartum care; I felt anxious about giving birth in the U.S., where postpartum care culture is not as developed.
To help future mothers who might face these challenges, I was determined to bring postpartum support and lactation massage to mothers in the U.S. I spent a long period in South Korea, studying both the theory and techniques. I worked as a nurse at a postpartum center in South Korea, which helped me a lot when I later became a lactation consultant and learned lactation massage techniques.
Lactation consultants are certified medical professionals who must complete 1,000 hours of clinical practice and pass annual exams to obtain and maintain their qualifications. Additionally, lactation massage requires extensive time and hands-on practice to master. The time and cost required to learn this skill are significant.
It took me nearly a year to be a lactation consultant who has perfected the technique. For me, this journey was especially challenging as I endured the heartbreaking loss of my mother when I had my first daughter. There were moments when I felt like giving up, but my desire to help mothers in the U.S.—where the lack of postpartum care was evident, and lactation massages are not as widely practiced—kept me going. I knew that investing my time, energy, and resources into this profession was worth it if it meant offering meaningful support to mothers who need it most.
Thankfully, this skill has been of great help to mothers in the U.S. who struggle with breastfeeding due to breast issues. It has also become a major driving force behind my ability to operate Yuna Lactation & Wellness Center today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the early stages of starting my business, I worked as an operating room nurse at the hospital, and in my remaining time, I worked as a lactation consultant. Balancing both jobs at the same time was challenging.

I’d work my nursing shifts during the day at the hospital, then in the evenings, I’d go to moms’ homes to help them with feeding their babies. Before I had my office, I made house visits and often worked late into the night. It wasn’t always easy arriving at a client’s house after finishing an evening shift and working past midnight.

There’s one night I’ll never forget—a mom called me for help in the middle of the night, and I was in such a rush that I missed my own pumping time. I ended up doing the whole consultation with my clothes soaked. I’ve also traveled to places like San Diego and San Francisco to help moms, even when they were far away. It was physically exhausting to juggle both roles, but I pushed through, because I knew I was making a difference for these moms and their babies.

Additionally, lactation massage is not well known in the U.S., so promoting it has been a continuous challenge, and this effort is still ongoing. Lactation massage provides significant help with issues such as low milk supply, breast engorgement, mastitis, and weaning. Many mothers give up breastfeeding due to these problems, but I hope that lactation massage becomes more widely known in the U.S. so that mothers can breastfeed more easily and comfortably.
