Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherida Harris
Hi Sherida, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a South Los Angeles native it’s always been important for me to be a part of the continued growth and development of our community, especially as it relates to empowering youth leadership.
My journey in youth development started off in the classroom as a teacher. My time in the classroom cultivated the opportunity to connect with young people on a deeper level, helping them unlock their potential by recognizing their strengths for success. Being an educator has reinforced my belief in the power of education and mentorship to shape not only individual lives, but also the future of our communities.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to continue building on that foundation, as a social worker, volunteer Girl Scout Troop Leader of 14+ year, committee member for Compton Girls Club, and most recently the Los Angeles Site Director for The Hidden Genius Project in support of initiatives that focus on helping young people grow, learn, and thrive.
The Hidden Genius Project, a national nonprofit organization, was founded in Oakland in 2012 by five Black male entrepreneurs/technologists who were unnerved by the dramatic juxtaposition between the high unemployment of Black male youth and the plethora of career opportunities within the local technology sector. To address this challenge, the founders established a program to connect young Black males with the skills, mentors, and experiences that they need to become high-performing entrepreneurs and technologists in a 21st century, global economy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As rewarding as this work is, there are undoubtedly challenges that can make the journey more complex.
Navigating societal or systemic barriers, such as educational inequities can feel overwhelming. These larger issues can impact a young person’s sense of possibility, and overcoming them requires both individual support and broader advocacy efforts.
I believe that addressing these inequities will take collaboration and sustained effort, but every step we take can open doors for the next generation. However, despite these challenges, the reward of seeing young people grow, gain confidence, and realize their potential makes it all worthwhile. I believe that through perseverance, creativity, and a strong support network, we can continue to find ways to overcome these obstacles and make a lasting impact.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As the Los Angeles Site Director building relationships with stakeholders, including participants, families, partners, and local organizations, is central to my role in fostering a sense of community and ensuring that our site remains responsive to the needs of those we serve.
At The Hidden Genius Project the focus of mentorship for the youth is our highest priority. This level of engagement helps our team members to fosters a supportive relationship where young people can express themselves freely, ask questions, and grow without fear of judgment. This trust builds a foundation creating a safe space for growth.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Having a mentor is such a valuable step in personal and professional growth. Based on my own experience, the one tip that I like to share with others is to not be afraid to reach out. When you identify someone you believe could be a good fit, don’t hesitate to reach out. Be clear about why you respect their work, how your vision and goals align with the work that they are leading, and the mutual benefits.
Mentorship should be a two-way relationship. You as an individual can also offer value to your mentor as well, whether it’s fresh perspectives or support in their work. Most people are flattered by the request and happy to help.
