Meet Peter Barrow of Altadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Barrow

Hi Peter, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started playing golf when I was 9 years old in Barbados. I thoroughly enjoyed it to the point of representing my country for many years as a junior. It was a great source of pride and introduced me to many friends I still have today. In golf, you get to meet and travel to places that would be rare in another sport or setting.

A decade ago, I started as a shop assistant at Altadena Golf Course. My former boss encouraged me to join the PGA of America to get myself fully immersed in the golf industry. I am now the head golf professional and one of the PGA Coaches on staff at my facility.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, because every career has its challenges. My family didn’t initially understand why I couldn’t opt for a stable corporate job. Moreover, the financial outlay and study requirements of the PGA’s golf management program are equivalent to a college degree. Therefore, I had to decide before I started if this was the path I wanted to pursue.

Weekends are the backbone of any golf course as a recreational activity. This meant forgoing many social events and being on property before dawn on a Saturday or Sunday. Personally, the long-term goal of being a golf professional in Southern California made it all worth it. Doing what you love is a privilege so I feel very lucky every morning I get to the course and stare at the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As the head golf professional at my facility, I am responsible for instruction and equipment repair. This involves modifying clubs to accommodate golfers who aren’t average height.

On the teaching side, it’s getting a lady confident enough to play with her husband who loves the game. It’s getting a junior the skills needed to play on their high school team. It’s helping the experienced golfer overcome nerves to win the club championship.

I’m most proud of helping golfers reach their goals because it imbues in them a sense of self-confidence that empowers them as a whole.

I think what sets me apart is my willingness to learn from trusted sources within the industry. Whether it be mental, physical or technical, I will either know it, learn it or point you in the direction of someone who does.

In the mobile Internet age, the client is so well informed that you can’t “pull a fast one” on them. In order to meet their needs, expand your knowledge but be open to getting help from other sources. We have a saying in Barbados that “no man is an island”. It means that there is often strength in working together.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d say that adaptability is key to my success. If I only had one method of teaching, I’d only attract one group of people. However, since my knowledge base is diverse, I am able to help juniors, seniors and golfers with physical limitations reach their goals because their individual abilities and tendencies aren’t overlooked.
