Hi 31st Select Spirits, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We started 31st Select 7 years ago as an experiment to make a unique whiskey. Whiskey however starts out as an unaged clear spirit (moonshine) , once we perfected this recipe we realized our moonshine was something unique. We devoted all our attention to our moonshine and changing the misconception of what this spirit can taste like. Years later we went legal creating 31st Select Sprits LLC not only do we have a love for moonshine but also the western spirit that lives on within the United States. Living in and operating out of Acton, CA a small ranching community we wanted to incorporate our towns rich history into the spirit we developed. 31st Select Spirits name derived from California being the 31st state admitted to the union. We are the 1st California Craft Moonshine TM, to ever be made. Acton, CA is famed for its gold mining history and moonshine has long been a part of US history and cowboy spirit. Our bottle and label reflect this history, the red rover mine ( one of Acton’s best producing mines ) a gold foil overlay to reference the gold mining history, a textured label reflecting aged paper and a vintage finger hole to bottle.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Jumping into a market of this caliber has been quite the learning curve. Since our start up we’ve had to navigate the legal process of creating a liquor company. Alcohol being one of the most regulated products in the country, has been a constant challenge. From laws and regulations to licenses, permits and taxes everyday is another challenge. Once we overcame the legal hurdles we were faced with another challenge; the misconception of moonshine. Marketing this product to consumers has been extremely difficult. Generally moonshine is seen as unpalatable and unpleasant. We’ve had tremendous pushback from retailers and consumers until they taste our spirit.

31st Select Spirits is comprised of three members all born and raised in Southern California who turned a hobby into a future full-time profession.
