Today we’d like to introduce you to Vijat Mohindra
Hi Vijat, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my journey in photography during my childhood in Illinois where I was deeply influenced by my mother’s black-and-white photography along with the work of her friends and mentors. Captivated by the visual power of images, I started experimenting with a Pentax K 1000 in high school and continued to pursue a degree in photography at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. After graduation, I worked as a photo assistant and then assisted an incredible stylist which eventually opened doors to shooting for notable figures like Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus. Over time, my distinctive monochromatic style gained recognition leading to collaborations with many high profile celebrities and brands. Today, I’ve expanded my creative vision with my own studio (The Powder Room Studio) with the vision to inspire other creatives while showcasing my signature vibrant and energetic style.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t all smooth sailing. Getting started had its fair share of bumps—lots of rejections and learning the ropes. But each struggle was a chance to grow and refine my style. Those challenges made me more resilient and ultimately helped me get to where I am today. It’s been a fierce ride, but I wouldn’t change a thing!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think of myself as more of an artist that uses photography as my medium rather than a photographer – I am most known for my hyper creative monochromatic imagery with a pop aesthetic. I love creating striking visuals that capture the energy and personality of my subjects. Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of celebrities and brands (from Nicki Minaj to Lady Gaga) and my work spans across magazine covers, album art, and high-profile campaigns.
What sets me apart is my meticulous approach to each image I create. Combining my detailed pre-planning with a spontaneous energy on-set creates the perfect dynamic. I’m most proud of my long-standing collaborations and the unique studio I’ve created which serves as a creative space for others to explore their vision. For me, it’s about creative perspectives and showing off the beauty and energy of the world through my eyes.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve had some amazing people along the way who’ve been crucial to my success. My mom was a huge influence from the start, inspiring my love for photography with her own work. During my early career, mentors and colleagues, including the stylist I assisted; Simone Harouche really helped me navigate the industry and grow my skills. Working with icons like Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, David Lachapelle and Donna Trope also opened up incredible opportunities and shaped my career. Each of these supporters played a vital role in helping me get to where I am today and continue to fuel my passion for photography.
