Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into this unique field began during the challenging times of the covid-19 pandemic. As the events revolving around the pandemic became more evident, it dawned on me that these difficult times needed a comforting and thoughtful reception, beyond the gloom that had been actively transpiring. My passion for flowers accompanied by the desire to bring support and comfort to families during such a delicate time motivated me to start my own flower business specializing in funerals. My goal was to help honor loved ones in a way that reflects their unique spirit, by creating meaningful, unique funeral flower arrangements. The covid-19 pandemic was a time that tested many of us in profound ways. Resources were limited and despite setbacks for me at the time, such as living in a two bedroom apartment with relatives, and having limited knowledge in regard to floral dynamics. I managed to make the best of it all with determination and faith. A true artisan will make the most with the tools they have at hand. Working towards my vision, I channeled my creative instincts to evolve what I considered just an idea, into a thriving and successful venture. Just like any skill, perfecting this craft took time, practice and hard work. In time I evolved and refined my skills and created a formula that would help me stand out from other florists. My funeral arrangements, from the ground up, were meant to stand out: Three-dimensional looks are a mainstay, rather than appearing flat or one dimensional; I believe this element contributes to a unique and meaningful outcome in my work. Staying committed to my goals has brought many opportunities my way, but life took a poignant turn with the passing of my beloved grandmother. This was particularly challenging for me, as I never experienced the loss of someone so close. In her memory, I created a Virgin Mary flower arrangement inspired by her devotion and purist attitude toward this religious figure, which is deeply ingrained in my heritage. This piece I shared on social media, then resonated with and reached hundreds of people. Since that pivotal moment in my journey, I have come to craft this arrangement for other families with the same earnest purview, which stems wholly in finding solace and granting a purpose in honoring legacy through my art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my flower business has been far from a smooth ride. As a small business beginning from the ground up, I’ve faced numerous challenges and have to wear many hats to get the job done. I started working out of my apartment with very limited space, but despite having my whole apartment filled with flowers, I never let that discourage me or stop me from getting the job done. I knew that with time, things would change for the better and I would eventually have more space to work on my flowers. As my floral business began to grow, I found I needed extra help. Fortunately, my family stepped in and were able to help as needed, even though they had their own responsibilities, their assistance made all the difference. Transportation was another challenge I faced in the beginning, as I didn’t have the right vehicle to transport my arrangements. We made it work with 2 or 3 cars, adapting as best as we could. Over time, I was able to invest in a van which made a significant difference in regard to transport. Another obstacle in my path was the sensitivity of the flowers to changes in temperature. This required a different approach to solve properly. Initially I had utilized my air conditioning unit to maintain proper temperatures and over time was able to invest in a refrigerated unit when they are ready for prep. Following this, they are kept in a thermostat controlled room after they have been arranged. I’ve learned, no matter how far you are into a business, new challenges will always arise. The key is to adapt and remain resilient. Embrace each obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow and remember that perseverance is what ultimately leads to success. Despite the hurdles, every step has been a learning experience and a testament to the dedication required to build something from scratch.

One thing that matters to me is that my clients are satisfied with the results of my work regarding their requests. In addition to this, I always strive to build long lasting positive relationships with my clients, in order to foster a supportive environment for open communication and reliable testimonials. With that said, what matters the most to me is that I am making an impact on the lives of my clientele that is withstanding of this critical statement.
