Exploring Life & Business with Bernadette Capulong

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Bernadette Capulong.

Bernadette Capulong

Hi Bernadette, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for graphic design has always been the guiding light for my professional path, leading me to where I am today with BC Design Haus. Before starting my own agency, I worked in corporate packaging for large brands such as Nestle, Mattel, and P&G where I put all my design knowledge to practice, creating packaging that made brands stand above the competition.

In 2009, I left the corporate world and started freelancing, where I acquired a taste for creative freedom, which I pursued to make my dream come true of starting my own agency, BC Design Haus. Starting out of my kitchen, it took six years of hard work and hustle until I incorporated BC Design Haus in 2015. The industry was turbulent at that time, but we adapted; the economy was tight, but we prevailed; the world was changing, and we evolved with it.

BC Design Haus has been resilient since its inception, and we were a niche design agency with less than five employees that became a full-service branding and marketing force with a brilliant team that brings their diverse range of talents to the table of our expertise. Our reputation is for innovation and quality created with agility. It’s made our reach expand far beyond Los Angeles and bring us clients from all over the country.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If the road to make your dreams come true is completely smooth, then that journey won’t give you the tools you need to keep that dream afloat. BC Design Haus has learned invaluable lessons and gotten so much stronger from the struggles we had to overcome that we wouldn’t be as successful without the struggle.

At the same time that I was incorporating BC Design Haus, I was also in the process of adopting my son. There were times when I was spread so thin I didn’t know if I could juggle both. However, the parallels I discovered between leadership and parenting helped push me through those challenges and taught me the value of taking time for yourself and recharging.

I used to think that trying to be a superwoman and take on every task without a fuss was the way to become a success. The children of immigrants often see their parents put superhuman effort into ensuring their children do better. Now, though, I believe giving yourself space to breathe makes you a more effective leader and parent.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
BC Design Haus is a full-service creative branding and marketing agency in Pasadena, California, with billion-dollar companies and small business clients from all around the world. Our mission is to make meaningful partnerships with brands by overcoming their challenges with personalized, creative solutions that positively impact their business.

BC Design Haus specializes in package design, branding, web design, digital marketing, social media management, advertising, and video production. We are a team of creative visionaries tapped into culture and able to harness the creativity of the past and present to forge the designs and trends of the future.

What sets BC Design Haus apart in the marketing world is our ability to quickly create branding that generates meaningful results. We pride ourselves on the agility to make waves in a world that’s always changing. We are a team of designers, marketers, and artists. However, it’s our grit and tenacity to hustle that makes us succeed.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
By the end of 2019, we were wrapping up one of our most financially viable years to date. By early 2020, the world changed, and no one knew what would become of their businesses. It taught our whole team that the world is always changing and the future can’t be predicted. It also taught us that no challenge is too great if you have the willpower.

We braced for impact and didn’t let the pandemic stop us from doing what we loved. We moved BC Design Haus remote, and though the team had to take the time to adapt, we were able to reconnect with our clients and get into our new workflow until business was running just as smoothly and seamlessly as before.
