Meet Nathalie Zagar of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Zagar

Hi Nathalie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am Nathalie Zagar, a French Mexican artist based in LA. I got here about four years ago to pursue my dream but before that happened, I had to do a lot back in Mexico. It all started when I was a kid because I was sure that I wanted to be in the film industry, except that back in the day I wanted to be an actor. I had always been involved in theater and musical theater in school and when I graduated I knew I wanted to pursue this career. I studied in Mexico the Bachelor in Communications and Performing arts, and got a better idea of all the different approaches to arts and communications from film all the way to sports journalism and political campaigns. When I graduated I felt it was time to concentrate on my career, so I came here to LA to pursue acting. This was during 2021, and the pandemic was still an important subject in the world so it was very hard for me to find any kind of job. Honestly, this made me realize that maybe I should try something different rather than acting, because sending self tapes and not getting replies and having to stay home waiting was not the best feeling for me. I found Script Supervising randomly, a friend of mine was filming a school project and he asked me to help him doing the job, I had no idea what it was about or what I had to do. He helped me with the basics that he needed for his project, and when I understood what the job was about, I felt like this was the place for me. Since that first time doing the job, I started reading many books and learned from others and I keep perfecting my craft by taking courses with the best in the industry. I consider myself a perfectionist, so every time I turn in a report or finish a project, I make sure that it looks as perfect as it can. When I get good comments on my turned in reports, I feel proud of my work and motivated to keep working and getting even better than I am.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but not because I have not been able to accomplish my goals rather than because of life’s bigger obstacles. I have learned so much from every single bump on the road and took on challenges I never imagined I would have to. Every single one of them has brought me to where I am now and I know that there is still room to grow and become even better. Situations like having to move to another country all by yourself and learn to grow up and be a responsible adult, as well as having to adapt to the world because there is a pandemic going on, or having to branch out and try new things as a strike is happening. Even though it has not been the easiest road, I am grateful for everything, and for where I am now and I will keep working hard to get to where I want to be.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a script supervisor in film. Basically my job consists of taking notes of everything that happens on set in order to keep track of what is being filmed so that the editor can go through the footage and cut the film well without having problems. I work with every department and make sure that everything flows smoothly and the continuity is well done. I love doing my job because I take a lot of attention to detail and like to be very precise about everything. I imagine in my head how the film is going to cut and so I can suggest different shots or alternatives in order to optimize the work and have the best outcome. What I think sets me apart from others that do the same job as I do, is that I also have a formation in acting, so it is easier for me to help the actors with continuity and remembering when they did what movement and on what line precisely. I am really proud of my work, and even though I know I still have a lot to work on and learn, I feel very confident with the way I present my final product.

What matters most to you? Why?
The thing that matters the most to me is to be happy. I grew up believing that you always have to do what you love and love what you do, because when you stop loving it, it feels like a weight has been put on your shoulders and you suffer a lot doing it. We know that in the past, people used to work in jobs that the family had or did what the parents wanted you to do. It was usually jobs that of course helped you to be financially independent but people hated going everyday to the office to do the job that payed for all the dues. Nowadays we prioritize happiness over settling for an okay job just to be financially stable. I do think that happiness is the most important thing to think about because even though it sounds cheesy and all we only have one shot at life and we should not spend it being miserable doing something that we absolutely hate doing.
