Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Wong
Hi Tim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to America at the age of 15 with some of my family members. Since then, after more than 12 years of schooling, I completed my degree in dentistry and has been working as a general dentist, an educator at the college level, a consultant to a dental supply company, an entrepreneur, an advocate for patient care, and a mentor to my fellow students. Now I am glad and grateful to be who I am and where I am in my career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a first generation health professional, language and cultural barriers had proven to be challenging when I first moved to America at the age of 15. I was fortunate enough to have supportive family, colleagues, and mentors since high school throughout my education until I received my doctoral degree in dentistry in 2018. I want to extend my appreciation to the all those I mentioned, and I strive to become a mentor to my fellow students who want to pursue a career in dentistry.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a general dentist by trade, completed my dental training at USC in 2018. Besides practicing at a local non=profit dental clinic, I also work in private practice – a few local dental offices providing comprehensive dental care to many community members. Besides being a clinician providing quality dental care, I am also heavily involved in community health fairs, providing dental screening for the underserved population in LA county. I also enjoy teaching dental hygiene students and doctoral dental students. I am also involved in advocacy for my profession and my colleagues at the state and national legislation level, spending time at both Sacramento and Washington D.C on lobbying efforts, where I had learned a whole lot on how organized dentistry can help further my profession.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
In 2019, one year after graduation, I was elected to be the President of the Chinese American Dental Society of Southern California, serving over 400 local dentists as their advocate. In 2022, I was nominated and selected by the Incisal Edge Magazine for their “40 Under 40” Dentists Award, highlighting the diverse, wide spectrum of work I am involved in my professional career. Now I serve as board member on a number of local dental societies at various capacities.
