Daily Inspiration: Meet Xiaojun Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiaojun Huang

Hi Xiaojun, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from graduate school in 2020, during the pandemic, I decided to look for a full-time designer job. However, the job market was at a standstill, so I decided to start my own design studio, JXJ Studio LLC. My studio provides design consulting services, including branding, typography, and print design, to help clients achieve their goals.

I have always enjoyed creating branding designs, listening to people’s stories, and understanding their needs. Knowing what my clients want to achieve is crucial for my studio’s work.

Currently, I am a full-time assistant professor of graphic design at the university while continuing to run my studio. I enjoy connecting people through my designs and educating the next generation of designers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
First, time management is a challenge. Balancing a full-time job with personal client work can be difficult, but it is rewarding to help people achieve their goals and see the impact of my designs. Second, attracting new clients and maintaining relationships with old ones is not easy. Building connections with clients and earning their trust is crucial for continued success. Hopefully, more new clients will appreciate my work and approach me with exciting projects.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a maker, designer, and educator. I maintain a research-based studio practice through commissions and self-initiated project collaborations with galleries. My interests lie in environmental experience design and all print mediums, specializing in experimental bilingual typographic graphics and symbol-making that combine Chinese and English. I navigate the intersection between Eastern and Western cultures, exploring the nuances of cultural fusion. I believe in creating communication that goes beyond reading to evoke feeling, using a multi-language system to inspire people to care about other parts of the world and enhance collaboration.
