Conversations with Kamel Goffin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamel Goffin

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My acting journey started from me having a dream. Like a literal dream while I was asleep. I had just finished a basketball try-out for the D-league of the NBA and it solidified that it was time for me to find something else to strive for in my life. I had a dream one night that I was an actor. I woke up confused and excited at the same time. Confused because I have never acted before nor did I have previous desire to act. Excited because I saw that I was going to be very successful at it. But now I have no blueprint or how to attain the success that I saw in my dream. I was a member of Christian culture center church in Brooklyn NY and I kept seeing the actor Jamie Hector and after being reluctant to approach him for weeks I finally swallowed my pride and asked him for counsel on how to get started . He told me he went to Lee Strasberg acting and film institution and gave me a recommendation letter. I took that letter went to the school and got in. I kept learning and studying after my time was up and now I can say that I am not only a seasoned actor but I am also a director now. Being that I have just directed my first film called Seven miles from forever.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been everything but smooth. I was working for the NYPD for 13 years while I was acting. I took that leap of faith to quit my job and go into acting full time. Not knowing that all hell would break loose. I quit in 2019, 2020 the pandemic kicked in and shut down the world. I was able to book some parts during that time. That’s when I appeared on Godfather of Harlem (starring Forest Whitaker) and Colin in black and white on Netflix. But that feeling of accomplishment did’t stay long because just as I started getting a win streak I was contacted to be on a few shows after my auditions but now there’s vaccine mandates. And for strong personal reasons I had to decline and let the opportunities pass by. So at the time it was a long drought from acting work. Just as things start to open up again to being normal her comes the actors strike. Now today we are still living in the drought of that strike. So yes there has been many struggles but the main one is the struggle you sometimes feel internally for not booking a role in a long time. It plays on your confidence because you never get a reason why you didn’t get the role , you just don’t hear anything back after the auction.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an actor/director. I have had roles on shows like Godfather of Harlem, Atlanta, Colin in black and white, Makeup and Breakup. Movies such as Montross blood rules, The business of Christmas 1&2. What sets me apart is definitely my work ethic. I am known to show up on set and not need a script because I did the work before I arrived to set.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck I believe strongly in God and that He is ordering my steps. I believe in preparation meeting opportunity.
