Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocco Caruso.
Hi Rocco, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Rocco Caruso, a 23-year-old photographer, filmmaker, and artist who grew up in the Swiss Alps. My aspirations have always been ambitious and will continue to help me get to where I want to be. My parents were pro snowboarders, and that whole snowboard mentality and making a living out of what you love formed the person I am today. I learned to ski before I correctly learned to walk. I was also exposed to filmmaking at a very young age because the skiing industry is closely related to the art of filmmaking. So, while I was still a kid, I knew I could never happily work a regular 9-5; I had to become my boss and create a living out of what I love doing. The more I make, the more I adore using my camera to capture feelings and moments and to inspire others through that medium. The free snowboard mindset influences my artistic endeavors and will continue to do so forever. I want to encourage others to follow in my footsteps and build something greater than myself. I enjoy looking for ways to be different in whatever I do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
I am a very driven person who can’t be unmotivated not to do something. If somebody tells me not to do something in a negative context, I want to complete that idea 100 times more. Of course, the long road from having an initial idea to finishing it to a point you’re happy with is a whole journey with ups and downs, even bigger ups and even bigger downs. Still, completing said idea and seeing people interact with it makes every down worth it. Also, loving the process of creation and learning through that makes bumpy roads fun. In that context, I never have true struggles that stop me because I know from every mistake and my huge life goals pull me through everything. There are tiny struggles I have on a daily, for example, planning how my Instagram feed looks, deciding what to wear, finding a perfect song for a video, or also just trying to get into contact with people who are very hard to get into contact with. All these struggles/bumps are part of the journey, so I don’t see them as struggles. I make every day the best and have fun in whatever I do, even the struggles.
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us a bit more about your work.
I mainly work in photography and filmmaking and am known for my photoshoots with various models, musicians, and creatives. Next, I create multiple films, from ski films and music videos to poetic films pushing genre conventions. I do not want to be put in a box and want to push boundaries in everything I do, so I am or will be known for doing that and laying a heavy focus on personal style. Photography and filmmaking are the same for me; they are mediums to convey ideas through the lens of a camera. In the future, I want to push boundaries in what I do even more and specialize in the meaning of art behind everything. Many of my current ideas are still in the works but will be put out to the public soon. What sets me apart from others is that I am myself, and they are themselves.
What matters most to you?
Being yourself, staying true to that in your art, creating unique art that is a reflection of yourself, and inspiring people to be themselves through that is what is most important to me. There are an insane number of people copying other people’s styles, which makes sense because everybody wants to fit in and might not even know who they are. It is essential to find yourself and be you no matter what. Nobody can be better than you.
