Today we’d like to introduce you to Majo Felix
Hi Majo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My musical journey started in Puebla, Mexico, where I grew up. I always loved music and joined multiple choirs, embarking on a journey to become a singer by attending The Music Conservatory of the State of Puebla at the age of 12. Later on, I was captivated by the art of storytelling through music, especially in composition, so I changed my main instrument to the piano and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Music at the University of the Americas Puebla, where I studied jazz and classical music.
I later attended The Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program in Seattle, Washington, and obtained a Master’s Degree in Film Composition under the guidance of acclaimed composer Hummie Mann. After graduating, I founded my full audio production studio, Sky Rose Music LLC, where I worked on many films (“Homemade Christmas,” “A Storybook Christmas,” “Hint of Love,” and “Saying Yes to Christmas,” among others), video games (“Greak: Memories of Azur,” “Lonesome Village,” “A Tiny Sticker Tale,” “Homestead Arcana,” among others), and mixed media projects as an original Composer.
During my journey, I have joined many wonderful teams and have done a wide variety of audio jobs. In 2019, I was an Instructor for Music and Sound Design for video games at DigiPen University. In 2020, I joined 343 Industries as an Audio QA Tester, and in 2022, I joined the Novel Effect team full-time as a Soundscape Designer, where I wrote original music; crafted sound design; and auditioned, edited, and recorded original voiceover for over 180 books on the platform.
In 2020, four friends and I founded Game Audio Latam, a community focused on unifying and promoting the development of the video game audio industry in Latin America. We support professionals from the region and anyone looking to enter this profession. To achieve this, we create content in Spanish addressing different topics related to video game audio, approaching them in a personal, professional, and inclusive way to connect with the entire community. We carry out various activities to stay dynamic and connected with what is happening in the industry. Additionally, we have a server on the Discord platform, where we promote job offers, conduct sound design and musical composition challenges, and host a “video game club,” meetups, Q&A sessions, and many more activities. The community was named one of the Game Changers of 2021 by Game Industry Biz.
I have also been invited to give talks on game audio at Game Sound Con, Game Developers Conference, and Game Audio in Norway, and was selected as part of the Future Class of 2021 by the Game Awards.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has not always been smooth. I think my main struggle has been that a career in audio for media is not a straight path, and every person has different experiences and a different way of achieving success. Trying out new things and finding what I’m strongest in, while working on my weaknesses, has helped me find my path.
Additionally, it’s hard to stand out among all the other fantastic audio professionals. I have found that the best way to do so is to be true to what you like and what excites you. It hasn’t been easy to find my own voice, and there is always a constant need to differentiate myself and stand out, which requires a lot of experimentation and refinement. This process was both exciting and daunting, as it involved countless hours of trial and error.
Another significant challenge has been keeping up with the rapid advancements in audio technology. The industry is ever-evolving, and staying current with the latest tools, software, and techniques is very important but also very challenging.
For me, the best part of it all is that we are not alone, and there are many wonderful audio professionals eager to help. I try to do my best to help others as much as I can.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most known for orchestral, upbeat, and fun music. I love music that makes people happy and makes them smile. I especially love music that helps tell a story, which is why I do a lot of work in video games and film. I try to put my whole heart into every project that I do, but I am especially proud of the work for “Greak: Memories of Azur.” It was a very exciting and fulfilling experience, and I hope the people who listen to the music can connect with the emotions of the characters and the story of the game.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have had many people in my life who have helped my career. The first of them would be Hummie Mann, with his constant mentorship and guidance during my time at the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program. I truly value and cherish all the advice he gave me, and I keep it in mind every time I’m composing. I also owe a lot to my co-founders of Game Audio Latam: Ricardo Cervantes, Carlos Egas, Rodrigo Ferzuli, and Jazmin Giolito. Their commitment and dedication to helping others and their vast knowledge of game audio have been very inspirational and instrumental in my career. Finally, Monet Gardiner has been an incredible mentor in the video game sphere and has helped me so much in finding a space in the video game industry.
