Meet Carl Buehl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Buehl.

Carl, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
That’s a multi-layered story. I’m an Emmy Award Winning Executive Producer in television, a former professional guitar player and have been a Psychic Medium since I was a kid, I just didn’t know that’s what you called it at the time.

I started playing guitar when I was 8 years old and fell in love with the instrument. I went to high school in Seminole, Florida and played in a few rock and roll bands. Then at 16, my Mass Media teacher encouraged me to take a summer job at an AM talk radio station. That job and company kickstarted my radio and TV career.

By the age of 18, I had my own radio show and by 20 I had my own television show in Tampa, Florida. I was also playing music regularly in clubs throughout South Florida. Via several lucky crossroads and my TV show, I caught the attention of the guitar player from Journey, Neal Schon and his business manager Carolina Bagnarol, who offered to represent me. After a few failed attempts at “making it” in Florida. Carolina convinced me to “move west young man.” So music and television lured me to Los Angeles in 1990.

While music was my initial focus in LA, I had also learned how to edit television in Florida. I was lucky that editing paid the bills while the band we formed continued to write and record. Around 1992, I was editing a lot of network and cable “reality shows.” Clients included all the major networks as well as cable and I was doing a ton of MTV shows. An NBC kids show I was editing for a production company in Burbank gave me an offer to direct the next season and signed my ticket to join the Director’s Guild. Within 3 weeks of that offer, our band received 2 offers for recording contracts. While I certainly have been labeled a “creative overachiever” I had to choose one. Needless to say, “Rockstar” didn’t land on my business card. From directing I moved into producing then have been blessed with several successes as a showrunner. Then around 1999, Spirit came knocking on my door!

My first Spirit experiences when I was a child were with my “imaginary friend” named Charley who I later discovered to be my primary Guide in spiritual work. Through self-discovery and self-training in the mid to late 90’s, I was performing group Mediumship readings in online chat forums to test myself. Amassing transcripts from those readings, I then submitted those documents to scientific scrutiny with Dr. Gary Schwartz at the University of Arizona who was well known for his research on afterlife communication.

Skepticism is a large part of being a successful producer and I certainly wanted to make sure I wasn’t actually going crazy or “hearing voices” in the way most people think. Dr. Schwartz soon called, impressed by the material and my approach to self-testing, he asked if I would be interested in participating in his research.

I continue to participate in afterlife scientific research with Dr. Gary Schwartz as well as publicly speak, demonstrate and organize Mediumship development. I have attended formal education in Advanced Medium & Psychic studies with internationally recognized Mediums and Instructors from The Arthur Findlay College, Mavis Pittilla and Paul Jacobs as well as studied with (LWISSD) Master Teacher Colby Rebel. I believe Medium communication is an important part of the grief healing process as it demonstrates the continuing bonds we have with those who have crossed over. I am currently blending my Spiritual and television life, producing a documentary about the “Soulphone”, a very exciting technological breakthrough from Dr. Schwartz and his team at the University of Arizona while I also serve on the Spiritual Advisory Board for the Soulphone Foundation.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This question made me LOL. Hell, yes there have been obstacles and challenges! You cannot have light without the dark and you cannot have successes without learning from failure.

Being a “creative” can be tough. It took me a long time to admit to myself that all these creative things I was doing meant I was an “artist.” I think artists are inherently insecure in a lot of ways. With music, it was a given. Pouring my heart into songwriting felt great but if you are going to make a living at it, people have to like it and want to buy it. Plus doing that with other musicians is often challenging in itself. Same thing goes with television. As an Executive Producer and Showrunner, networks are basically handing me a huge bag of money saying “we trust you to deliver a successful television show.” So come up with a great story, great characters, put together a great team, make it look awesome and get great ratings. Obstacles and challenges are an every day thing. A big part of the job is being a professional problem solver. You have to think on your feet and not be afraid to make decisions, even if they’re wrong. Then own mistakes and give credit where it’s due. Holding honor and integrity in high regard in the entertainment business is often a challenge too.

Back in 2002, my ability to talk to dead people was still a closely guarded secret from those in my TV career world. But I tried to blend my television and spiritual work by creating a show about people first discovering those abilities. Part of my pitch materials were the transcripts I had from my early online medium readings but I had redacted my name from those transcripts. My agent at the time was quite perturbed with me that I wouldn’t reveal the name of the Medium that was receiving such accurate information about people’s deceased loved ones. At a meeting in his 3rd floor office, after much persistent badgering, I revealed the Medium was me. His face turned sheet white and he went silent. Now I became the badgering one! “What?” “Well…?” “Are you going to say anything?” “Hello…dude!” He finally responded with “I can’t decide if I want to jump out of this window or throw you out of my office!” I sat for a few moments in stunned silence. Then responded with “that’s a really strong response, why do you say that?” He replied “I want to jump because you’re freaking me out and this scares the shit out of me.” Then continued “Or throw you out of my office because you are going to ruin your television career!” I winced a bit and replied “What are you talking about?” He goes on to say “I’m Mr. Network President and I hand you millions of dollars entrusting you to deliver my TV show. Then I find out you are into this woo woo airy fairy shit and claim to talk to dead people? I won’t ever hire you again. So, breathe a word of this outside this office then kiss your career goodbye.” The show wasn’t bought and I was dropped by the agency.

Toward the end of 2014, I couldn’t keep Spirit on hold any longer. After a month long New Year’s trip to Bali, I came back and “came out” to my TV colleagues. Mediumship has its many challenges as well. First and foremost is “giving what you get” and getting your own doubting mind out of the way of the messages. Even though I’ve had years of proof and scientific testing that continue to convince me I can always trust Spirit’s messages. It’s still a struggle to get my own perceptions and insecurities out of the way. We’re fallible humans that sometimes have bad days. Then there are the skeptics and what I like to call the “terminal disbelievers.” Those that when you say “Your Dad is in Spirit and is showing me he loved working with his hands, especially I believe on cars. He’s giving me a name of Richard…does that make sense to you?” They look at you deadpan and say “No!” then exclaim that you are “cold reading.” Meanwhile their friend chimes in saying “Well your Dad’s nickname was Dick and he did love working on motorcycles, plus he died 3 years ago.” The disbeliever then says “well he probably Googled it!”

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My TV company is Cre8TV Spot. I’m proud of being an Emmy Award-winning and three-time Emmy nominated television Producer. With over 34 years of entertainment industry experience including 31 years of television, I provide excellence in creative vision, execution and delivery in network and cable alternative television series, documentary, television production, reality series and reality television development.

My Mediumship business is www.Lifeandlovecontinues.com where I provide medium readings, psychic readings as well as group readings and public demonstrations. I pride myself on providing a strong connection with spirit while approaching every reading in a pure, authentic and healing manner. I’m proud of the healing I bring to each and every connection and I’m also very proud of the research work I have participated in with Dr. Schwartz. I’ve been honored to have him offer his own testimony. Dr. Schwartz states “Carl is a science-minded medium whose readings are both evidential and meaningful. He is among the most skilled, informed, and compassionate of the gifted mediums I have tested scientifically.”

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I could so clearly sense and see my “imaginary friend” Charley as we would be sitting down for dinner. I would insist that my Mom should set a place for him next to me. She would always oblige and make the setting while talking to Charley too. I never knew if she sensed him too but the fact she engaged was encouragement enough. Mom always encouraged and supported me in each creative pursuit as well. Thanks Mom!
