Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerald David Bauman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a young boy, my Grandmother would come over to our home and just sit in a chair dripping in jewelry. I would love to sit on her lap and play with her jewelry. My Uncle later on told me to work in a business where I can take with me big wealth in small items like diamonds and jewelry.
My father told me after that visit that his mother is part of the Royal Russian family and every one fled Russia and went to other countries. My grandfather started in San Diego, The Superior Diamond company. When I grew up I never forgot what my uncle told me. So that guided me into the Diamond and jewelry business.
I am where I am today being the Beverly Hills Private Jewelry by being honest, seriously, and guiding my clients on how to choose or buy diamonds or color stones and jewelry. Since I Love what I do my passion come through and my clients love that. Since I have the passion for what I do earning money comes second in line, so people know I am not out for the last dollar in their wallet.
My business is all about word of mouth. I will go to my clients home or office for their convenience. I am happy to do that.
25% of my clients I have never met. They trust me and I deliver what they want or better and they keep coming back. Email and the internet is the best thing in the world. My clients are all over the world.
My clients buy all year round I am not one of those jewelers who wait for Christmas to make their year. I LOVE what I do and it make people very happy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have had several bumps in the road over the 40 years I have been the Private Jewelry. I was a young Private Jewelry Jetsetter. I did my business at parties all over the world until in 1987 I lost 99% of my money in the stock market. To this day I don’t own one share of stock.
Tina Turner, a client for 17 years until she moved to Europe to live. Was my therapist and would tell me her stories and guide me on what I should do. I lost my money, my 5th avenue apartment and had to move back to my small home in Los Angeles, where I still live. Oh yes poor poor me. But that was my reality. Tina told me one thing which I share to others ” Do what you have to do to get to where you want to go” just don’t hurt anybody. That is what I did. I worked 7 days a week doing whatever that would pay my bills, didn’t have any vacation for seven years. To afraid I would miss a client.
After all that I now believe that everyone will get a deal no matter how rich they are. That turned into a great business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work as a private Jeweler in Beverly Hills. My clients are global and 25% of my clients I have never met. TRUST is the Word.
I am a Diamond Nerd. I love diamonds and so I could not get enough of information on them. Don’t get me started on the different types of diamond crystal material. My blog is “The Diamond Expert” by Gerald David Bauman
I shop the world for the perfect diamond or jewel for my client where most jewelers sell what they have.
One client was Very specific on shape, cut and measurements and to top it off the crystal. It took me three months to find the perfect diamond for her. I found the diamond in Belgium on a cutting wheel. 13 carats plus, emerald cut. large cut corners, small keel line and Type IIa diamond crystal. The retail value was about 4 million dollars and the husband was extremely happy paying under 1.5 million.
When I am designing for a client. I have gone into the client’s clothes closet to see what kind of person she is. Then I design from that. Example one had a closet filled with Black Armani and Chanel. So her taste is Clean lines, European with an edge. I created many jewels for her to wear and she just love them all. I am working with her again on other jewelry she doesn’t wear. soon to be jewelry she will love and wear.
I go beyond the duty of a Private Jewelry. I got a call at midnight from a client who was fling in the morning for go the Emmy Awards. She was up for one. Her earring didn’t fit right on her ears at that moment. I got out of bed, when to her home saw the problem made an adjustment and she was happy. I went back to bed. She won an Emmy. All very happy.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Tina Turner was a big part on my life. She is an amazing person. Completely different from her stage person.
One other person was Cheryl Reventlow – Post. She is known for 2 things. The Cheryl in the original Mousekeetes and the daughter – in – law of Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth Heiress.
These 2 ladies are pure friends. The both centered me and guided on how to be to best person I can be which translate in my business.
