Check Out Alexus Diaz’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Diaz

Hi Alexus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey with photography began when I was around 13 years old. My uncle Aaron, who is about four years older than me, has always been a figure I deeply admire. At the time, he was deeply passionate about filmmaking and videography, even starting a film club at his high school. I was fascinated by the entire process, from filming with his friends to meticulous hours spent editing.

Eager to be a part of it, I begged my mom to buy me a camera. I vividly remember going to Best Buy and purchasing the Canon T2i for $300. My uncle showed me the basics of exposure and then sent me on my way to figure the rest out on my own. While I initially focused on video, I eventually discovered my true passion for photography.

From that point on, my camera was attached to my hip. I took photos of my dad, cousins, friends, and myself. In high school, I even started booking shoots for $50, which felt like a significant achievement at the time.

Before heading to college, my dad encouraged me to start my own photography business, but I wasn’t quite ready yet. However, the idea stayed with me. During college, I realized I was procrastinating on my passion, so I decided to take a break from school to fully dedicate myself to photography. In 2020, I officially launched my business, and it has been a labor of love ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say my journey has been as smooth as it could be, marked by a steady and consistent progression. I appreciate that each small step has led to significant milestones. However, some of my biggest challenges have been mental. I’ve grappled with intense imposter syndrome and a fear of failure. In the beginning, I was even hesitant to identify myself as a photographer. I’ve had to be extremely intentional with my self-talk, reinforcing the belief that I belong and that I am meant to be here.

Every shoot since starting my career has been a stepping stone in building confidence in myself and in my craft. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is how to get out of my own way. Continuously focusing on the fear from imposter syndrome or the possibility of failure always led me to the same place— mental paralysis that kept me from progressing. I had to realize that failure is a relative concept and often a self-imposed pressure. While I still occasionally experience these doubts, I now have the tools to push through and continue moving forward. I am also extremely blessed to have a supportive community around me whenever I need encouragement.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fashion photographer and I specialize in portraits and studio lighting. I am known for my unique shooting style and attention to detail. I think my intentionality and devotion to improvement sets me apart. With each shoot, I strive to push my limits.

My 2 primary goals while putting a shoot together are to be a vessel to God and to grow. If I don’t feel uncomfortable at some point, I know I didn’t push myself enough. I think that’s why there is such visible improvement in my work. I dedicate myself to this craft weekly, whether through researching techniques, exploring new gear, learning innovative lighting setups, taking editing courses, or practicing composition.

I take great pride in my consistency and the progress I’ve made. Additionally, I cherish the incredible creative individuals I have met and collaborated with along the way!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I had a big personality growing up, with a whole lot of creativity and imagination. I grew up singing and playing the piano and spent a lot of time performing. I was the kid who wanted to play every sport, join every dance class, and start every hobby. I am grateful for my parents who gave me the freedom to explore any interest I’ve ever had.
