Today we’d like to introduce you to Raj Naik
Hi Raj, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up drawing and painting from a very young age and then continued to study art in boarding school in India. After a brief stint in Switzerland, I moved to Los Angeles to study computer graphics and design. Additionally, I enrolled in the evening fine art program at Otis College of Art and Design and studied under Franklyn Liegel who pushed me to explore continuously. It’s been quite a journey and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to live on different continents. I had to learn, communicate and express myself in several languages along the way but art has always been my most effective mode of self expression.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In my opinion, the process of making art is never a smooth one. There are always battles to be fought. The struggles have ranged from creative blocks to self doubt but I’ve always found a way to overcome these challenges by not stopping. I just kept working through the peaks and valleys.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a painter specializing in contemporary abstracts that are bold and powerful in nature. The basis of my work is a space in which minimalism and maximalism fuse and take form. Everything and nothing. Parts are revealed and concealed until there is equilibrium.
The works vary in size and sometimes exceed 12 feet in height. I’ve been fortunate to have had some large scale commissions which I have completed for clients all around the world. I create everything in my studio here in Los Angeles and the works ship internationally.
Locally, I work with interior designers and architects to create bespoke pieces for their client’s homes.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The focus was inwards, and as a result, I was able to approach the works from new angles. The crisis limited travel and exploration but I made the most of it by creating daily, something or the other, whether big or small, simple or intricate. The creativity did flourish during this time.
