Rising Stars: Meet Darrin & Carolyn Jaques of Cote d’ Azur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrin & Carolyn Jaques

Hi Darrin & Carolyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Cote d’Azur is a certified Green holistic wellness center that’s served Pasadena for 21 years.

While we are family owned and operated, we work as a collective of like-minded healing artists in a two-story Victorian house just south of Old Pasadena. This charming location, built in 1896, is the perfect space for our upcycled, recycled, style, that we call ‘steampunk light’.  Our location is surrounded by tall green bamboo hedges, for that perfect hidden escape feel. There is free street parking, with no time limits and we also have a small parking lot behind the location. Just take the gravel driveway to the right of the house and park under the sycamore trees!

We started with an idea of using global tribal techniques in a spa environment. And we wanted it to be the sort of place that we would want to work in: kind, compassionate, respectful. Where we could develop our healing arts craft and encourage others to do the same.

We became a collective during the housing market crash of 2008 and we were able to gain solid partners who have a shared vision in helping serve our community.

As hippy-nerds we love discovering and sharing the science behind the magic of the healing arts. In the early days of energy-blended massage, the ancient theories seemed like magic, but since our inception, there has been much research that supports their validity.  So consider who you’d prefer to hear energy information from?  Morgan Freeman in a physics show?  or a barefoot shaman?  In the arenas of genetics and quantum theory, some of the ideas are in unison.

Darrin is a science major from UCLA and Carolyn is an English major who has designed much of the concept and product line used on a daily basis. Tapping into her tribal ancestry, as a descendant of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian tribe, Bear Clan, she has not come to this profession by accident. The Bear Clan are the healers and protectors of the village. A title that we take seriously and are honored to be able to fulfill everyday. Toni Moore, our bear-clan daughter, is always the student. She continues learning new modalities, skin care specialties, energy work, and massage.  She studied Thai Massage in Chaing Mai, Thailand and is a fellow designer involved in product creation  from dream to reality.

We don’t consider our team mere therapists, but healing artists. We are terrible business people in that we look out for our workers and clients more than the bottom dollar.
We don’t overwork our people to ensure the last treatment of the day is just as good as the first,,.. We truly feel we offer the best massage in Los Angeles, in a hidden location where people feel instantly calm just upon entering our space.

We are energy gurus who help balance and clear people and spaces. Just think “ghostbusters” so who ya gonna call? Cote d’Azur!

We are also designers!  We’ve designed aromatherapy blends for 7 basic energy centers (chakras), for silky skin, pain relief, and natural bug repellant! Balms are pre-made.  Creams and gels are blended fresh, while you wait. Think old world apothecary!   We also design beautiful tea blends!  PMS, Depression, Menopause, Chest colds (Covid), Memory and Beauty blends; and our Turmeric Hot Chocolate a great addition to morning coffee to help bring pain relief!
We are mentors to others who hope to do this kind of work in their communities around the world.  From training to supplying products and helping others launch their dream spaces.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, it’s had ups and downs. We wouldn;t really say it’s been smooth, but over 20 years you learn a lot. We’ve dealt with bad businesses, bad business partners and clients that were… well, not really our clients. They saw great reviews, but really wanted marble floors, champagne and water features like a steam-room.  Our space is the opposite of all that.   It teaches you what to pay attention to and what kinds of questions to ask.
Economic downturns like the housing crash and COVID lockdown have been especially tough. But we live simply and I think it’s our secret to riding out these storms.

We are grateful to have been able to serve our community over the years, and meet so many wonderful people from every walk of life. Many have felt like family.  But being around so long also means you lose people – they move, they retire, they pass away. COVID was really hard with that. It hurts to lose people you’ve grown to care about.

We count ourselves lucky to be surrounded by really cool humans so there’s not much that’s bad. And we’ve learned to shake it off and move forward with as much grace and laughing at ourselves as we can.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Darrin is the deep tissue master. He melts.those jacked up shoulders and is the only one in the team who can do a mega 2 hr deep tissue massage at our location.

Carolyn is the energy guru who does major energy clearing that include past life, bloodline and current trauma relief. She also loves, loves, loves clearing spaces. She’s cleared homes, apartments, schools and business locations from funky junk. Sometimes ghosts, other times emotional vibration trapped in the space

The way we look at it: we never know when we’re going to see our clients again. They have come to us to get some work done, some relief, some healing. We want to get as much done in the time we have available. They honor us by choosing to come here. We honor them by doing the best work we can. Every time. And people seem to appreciate that.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Darrin loves this city. It is a great melting pot of people.from everywhere doing amazing things! This town influences the world!

Downside. Traffic sucks and we’ll never be able to afford a home!

Carolyn, a creative soul, loves and is comforted by the diversity in culture that is nurtured and protected here. Our community has abundant change-agents who can and will forge something better.

Downside:  Entitled drivers.  Traffic is a thing, but bullies on the road are the real bane.
