Life & Work with Ryan McCabe of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan McCabe

Hi Ryan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Sure! I’m a writer and performer from the aw-shucks Midwest by way of Toledo, Ohio. I fell in love with movies as a kid, the most foundational of which was “Batman Forever.” I even dressed up as the Riddler and goofed around like Jim Carrey to make my grandma laugh. I’ve found it’s less cute in my thirties, but occasionally I earn a tourist’s buck in front of Graumans.

I studied Film and Psychology at NYU, where I worked a number of odd jobs, from touring with a live audio group and animating a comedic short for actress Whoopi Goldberg, to voicing animated characters on a children’s fitness show.

I eventually moved to LA for the animation and comedy scene, where I was lucky enough to land a job at DreamWorks as a Talent Booker on a number of their high-profile animated TV shows: “Abominable and the Invisible City,” “Dragons the Nine Realms,” “Fast & Furious: Spy Racers,” to name a few. I’ve since moved on to work in the dubbing world at Iyuno.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oof, definitely not. I don’t know that I’ve met an artist who has had it easy. That said, I don’t think the experience or victories along the way would be nearly as rewarding if it was. Learn to love the process and even failure is a win.

As far as struggles go, know any good agents? You could probably wallpaper my apartment with the various rejection letters I’ve received. Although those aren’t nearly as pernicious as the voice of my “inner critic.” That’s what I really have to keep in check or I won’t get anything done.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do?

I write and perform stand-up and improv comedy. I act when the powers that be let me. In fact, I played a street artist in my good friend and collaborator Kahlil Maskati’s first feature film – “Do I Shock You Like Lightning,” which has its West Coast premiere at Vidiots this June in Eagle Rock.

What do you specialize in?

I know this isn’t a trade, but I’ve always strived to be a great collaborator. I try my best to be the guy that people want to work and bat ideas around with. To steal a line from my favorite author: “We are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.”

What are you known for, etc?

My friends frequently tease me for being “the nicest person” they’ve ever met, so I guess I have some people fooled! It’s true what they say though, kindness costs nothing and really does set people apart in the professions I’ve worked.

What are you most proud of?

Ah, this question is like a parent picking kids … “Who’s your favorite?!” I did have two pretty exciting developments in the past few months: There’s a coffee shop in Hollywood that I love called Sabor Y Cultura (Hi Sharon!), and the owner started selling my books and framed poems in her shop recently. In March I collaborated with some wildly talented people and co-wrote/performed a show on the Groundlings mainstage for their school’s Writing Lab. Hardest I’ve ever worked, but easily the most fun I’ve had doing a show, which I cannot mention without crediting the guidance and mentorship of our director – Leonard Robinson.

What sets you apart from others?

As far as what sets me apart from others, maybe my tireless work ethic. I’m a bit of a “mentality monster” when I set my mind on something.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m a pretty open book, but it has surprised people to learn that I’ve got a green thumb. I think it shocks them that I can keep a plant alive, but I really enjoy gardening and growing vegetables. It’s a good reminder of the “small consistent steps” adage.
