Today we’d like to introduce you to Shahan Rao.
Hi Shahan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As long as I can remember, I would visit the old town of Karachi with my father. My curiosity about the world around me was ignited at an early stage. Accompanied by my mom’s vintage Canon camera, a family heirloom, I found joy not just in documenting moments but in delving deep into the lives of the people I observed. My passion extended beyond the technicalities of using a camera; it revolved around the art of observation and visualization, imaging worlds that sometimes existed only in my mind. At 13, I started my photography journey in Pakistan, eventually diving into documentaries and commercials by 18. Making films stole my heart. But in Pakistan, filmmaking is still considered a distant medium, so I took a bold challenge to pursue cinematography in the United States. In this place, I believed my passion could be truly understood. This art form lets me showcase my collaborated point of view, which I sometimes fail to express through words.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While I was the first in my family to pursue art, my journey hasn’t been without its challenges. However, my approach has been rooted in the ideology of understanding my capacity for persistence in my work. Rather than viewing obstacles solely as struggles, I’ve embraced them as opportunities to enhance my skills and refine my craft. Each challenge becomes a chance to find joy in the process of creating art and to push the boundaries of my creativity.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a passionate Director and DP, who likes executing captivating visual narratives. With a keen eye for detail for crafting immersive experiences, I come from Pakistan, where films are not taken seriously as a profession. However, moving to LA had transformed my thinking. It allowed me to work on projects that have meaning and impact, changing the way people think.
Born with a passion for storytelling, I grounded myself as a director and DP who can make films based on true experiences . My work includes the Oscar-qualified film “Trigger,” “The Jazz Pianist,”“Season’s Club,” “The Jazz Pianist,” “Nebuchadnezzar,” and the highly anticipated “Pieces of Two,” which showcase my ability to delve deep into films where characters’ emotions weave powerful narratives that touch the hearts of viewers.
My journey began behind the camera. I started my photography journey in Pakistan, eventually diving into documentaries and commercials by the age of 18. Cinematography stole my heart, and I pursued projects in Pakistan until 2021, when I moved to the US for exciting opportunities. This art form lets me showcase my unique perspective, and collaborating with like-minded individuals amplifies that vision. With over 40 projects under my belt—films, web series, commercials, and music videos—I excel in collaboration, turning directors’ dreams into reality.
Pieces of Two is a story which really talks deep in why we as humans immaturely care about other’s flaws then the strength of the relationship we conduct.
I like doing projects which are grounded and resonate with audiences long after the credits roll. I am most proud of my journey from Pakistan to LA, overcoming the challenges of pursuing film in a culture that doesn’t traditionally value it as a profession. The Oscar qualification of “Trigger” stands out as a significant milestone in my career. Another film that is highly anticipated is “Pieces of Two,” which I directed. It will start an expanded festival run this year. Hollywood Tomorrow quoted it as a heartfelt resonant story in their live preview.
My unique background and perspective gives me my uniqueness in how I visualise ideas. Coming from Pakistan and making a name in the LA film industry has given me a distinct voice. My dedication to storytelling, attention to detail, and ability to evoke deep emotions in my films distinguish my work. I strive to create films that not only entertain but also provoke thought and inspire change.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The only advice that I have always got from people who are more experience than me is that you should have hunger and you should always be knocking door. I think using the internet to interact with people who inspire you and always be ready to work for people who you really trust in. That can take you way ahead.
