Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Messina
Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Messina’s journey in music is marked by both struggle and spectacular triumph. Born in White Plains, NY, and raised in New Hampshire, Messina’s passion for music was evident from a young age. She was actively involved in choir and solo performances and participated in the Miss America pageant system, where her talent for singing was further honed. Her early exposure to the stage set the foundation for her future in music, but it wasn’t without its challenges.
Her transition to professional music began after her education at Berklee College of Music, where she specialized in Electronic Production Design Audio Engineering. This background allowed her to not only perform but also understand the technical nuances of music production—a skill that has served her well in her multifaceted career.
Despite her growing success, Messina’s path was fraught with personal challenges, including battles with addiction, depression, and self-harm. These issues at one point seemed like insurmountable obstacles, but they also shaped her into the resilient figure she is today. Through therapy and a strong support system, she learned crucial life skills, such as self-love and boundary setting, which were instrumental in her recovery and professional journey.
Messina’s music deeply reflects her experiences, resonating with authenticity and raw emotion. Her songs, like “Fall to My Knees,” delve into her personal struggles and triumphs, offering her audience not just entertainment but also solace and understanding. This genuine connection has earned her a dedicated following, affectionately known as the “Messina Mafia,” who find strength and inspiration in her lyrics.
Today, Messina continues to inspire and innovate in the music industry. With over 500,000 streams on Spotify and numerous appearances on significant platforms, she uses her platform not just to share music but to advocate for mental health awareness, emphasizing the healing power of music. As she prepares for the release of her new album, “City Rose,” Messina remains committed to pushing artistic boundaries and supporting her listeners through their own journeys of self-discovery and resilience.
Her story is not just about her rise to fame but also about transforming personal adversity into artistic expression, highlighting the profound impact music can have as a tool for personal and communal healing.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Messina’s journey hasn’t been easy. There were times when she couldn’t get out of bed because depression weighed her down so heavily. She didn’t have the energy to talk, tears constantly welling up in her eyes as despair suffocated her. At her lowest, she couldn’t see a way out and considered taking her own life more times than she can count. The world around her felt too dark, and she was convinced she’d never escape the grip of her own thoughts. Being expected to project an image of success only made things worse, and she was terrified of admitting how deeply she was hurting.
In the end, it was reaching out for help that saved her. Therapy, rehabilitation, and the unwavering support of her loved ones helped Messina slowly claw her way back. It wasn’t quick or easy, but with each small step, she began to breathe again. She learned how to set boundaries and prioritize herself, no longer pretending everything was fine. Music became her lifeline, a space where she could pour out every bit of pain and frustration. Her songs became the raw and honest expressions of her struggle and resilience, and her audience embraced her for it. In sharing her darkest moments through music, she helped herself and others realize they’re not alone, proving that even from rock bottom, it’s possible to rise up again.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Messina is known for her fearless approach to confronting mental health struggles through her music. As a singer-songwriter, she uses her platform to shine a light on issues often kept in the shadows, offering listeners a raw, unfiltered perspective on recovery and personal resilience. Her songs, like “No Longer Wasted” and “Healing Memories,” capture this bold spirit, delving into themes like addiction, depression, and overcoming adversity. These tracks reflect Messina’s authentic storytelling, which resonates deeply with listeners and allows them to see their own experiences mirrored in her lyrics. This connection has solidified her as a voice of empathy and understanding.
What sets Messina apart is her unwavering commitment to sharing her story without compromise. Her vulnerability on stage and in interviews has fostered a supportive community around her—a safe space where her audience feels understood. By giving her fans a sense of belonging, she has made her music much more than entertainment. She’s created an inclusive movement, where her raw honesty continues to break down stigma and encourages her audience to embrace their journey, knowing that they are not alone.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Messina views risk-taking as an integral part of her journey, both as an artist and as an individual. In her career, she has consistently embraced risks, venturing into the complex and often stigmatized topics of mental health and addiction through her music. By choosing to publicize her personal battles in her lyrics, she has taken a significant risk, opening herself up to public scrutiny in an industry that often prioritizes a polished image. However, Messina believes that the authenticity and relatability of her music, which stems from her openness, far outweighs the potential drawbacks. This approach has not only differentiated her from many contemporaries but has also deeply connected her with her audience, forging a bond built on genuine understanding and shared experiences.
In addition to her thematic choices, Messina’s career decisions also reflect her risk-taking philosophy. Moving from traditional music pathways to independently producing and promoting her music, and launching a lipgloss line, Messina Glam, have been major financial and professional risks. Each step required a leap of faith, betting on her abilities and the loyalty of her fan base—the “Messina Mafia.” These ventures have taught her critical lessons about resilience and adaptability, reinforcing her belief that taking calculated risks is essential for growth and innovation. Her perspective on risk is clear: embracing uncertainty is not just about facing fear, but about seizing opportunities for transformation and breakthrough.
