Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Martins
Hi Victoria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been doing theatre for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a small, sister run theatre company in Artesia where I performed in every musical imaginable from around 4- 13. I then started doing theatre in high school, where I learned my love for straight plays and more serious acting.
I am now studying acting at CSU Long Beach. I am so grateful to be studying technique behind my art because it has forced me to grow so much as a human as well as an actor, and because of it I have created and performed so much art that I never thought possible.
Over the past few years, my friends and I have also started creating our own art away from school and it has become what brings me the most joy. Right now, we are actually working on a film called “Impact” that is set to film this summer and I am so beyond excited.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely depends on the time and space I have been in. In one light, I have been so lucky to have people who support my goal of becoming an actor. I mean, my parents are the reason I love it so much… I grew up going to the theatre and listening to show tunes every car ride with them. I also have the worlds most amazing friends who support my every move, come to all of my shows, and create stuff with me, which has definitely made the process easier for me.
I think one of the biggest struggles I am coming to terms with is the bias around artists in America. Most people don’t take you seriously once they hear that you’re an actor. They think you’re just dumb or vain or naive, when really all we want to do is help people and tell their stories. By now, I’ve learned to not let this bother me as much, but sometimes I do wish that artists were better listened to and understood than they are here.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am primarily an actor, but I also model and do costume, makeup, and hair design!
Acting is my biggest passion and it always has been. I remember doing projects in elementary school where all I ever wrote was that I want to be on Broadway. Of course my reasons for wanting to be an actor have morphed and changed since I was 5, but my passion for it has stayed steady. For now, I want to be an actor so I can help people understand themselves by seeing parts of them that they never noticed before in the characters I play and stories I tell. I am also learning that I am a transformational and character actor. I think this stems from the opportunity I’ve had to play a huge array of characters in college and noticing that my favorites have been people (or creatures) that live as far away from myself as possible.
I think I am most proud of the work I have created with my friends. To me, theatre and art are so much about community, so getting to do it with the people that I love has definitely been the most rewarding and inspiring part of my journey as an artist.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
As always, please support the arts in any way you can !!!
