Hi Nicole, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Nicole Leier – A Personal Statement
I believe that discipline will determine my reputation.
I cherish this industry and always have. As I grow within it, so does my desire to become a film director that will collaborate with the best minds out there.
My vision for my career is to work until children watch television and movies and dream about creating them, not just being in them. I want them to understand that it is possible to be talented, possess a unique voice, and be heard, not just look a certain way. I aim to contribute to changing the percentage of black directors in our industry.
I feel a calling to narrate stories for those who cannot, stories that educate, and stories that assist people in unique circumstances or help them see themselves accurately represented. To me, one of the most vital skills a director must possess is the ability to listen, and I believe my most powerful tool is empathy.
Directing is an extension of who I am as a person and an artist. Utilizing my voice through my directing work is how I can serve our community and play a role in driving positive changes.
Recently, I directed and wrote my fourth feature-length production, a thriller film. I also directed a US car commercial for LEXUS that celebrated Latin heritage. Having successfully completed long and short-form projects, I am even more enthusiastic about directing network TV and big-budget films.
Filmmaking represents one of the most impactful art forms. For me, creating films and TV shows is the most thrilling medium that filmmakers have at their disposal to share numerous stories with audiences worldwide. I aspire to direct TV series and films where I can deliver something unique and consistently contribute to the art form from one project to the next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, I have encountered a spectrum of challenges that shape my filmmaker journey. Confronting issues such as the industry’s diversity constraints and gender imbalances requires fortitude and a commitment to effecting change. Overcoming the hurdles of limited opportunities, financial barriers, and the complexities of networking while striving for creative autonomy demands resilience and strategic navigation. But the truth is, through dedication to amplifying underrepresented voices and storytelling, I am driven to surmount these obstacles, underscoring the tenacity and passion essential for thriving as a filmmaker.

Well… My work as a director, writer, and actor, I always work towards and hope I am reflecting a journey filled with passion, creativity, and a drive to push boundaries. Through my art, I strive to weave compelling narratives that captivate audiences and leave a lasting impact. Each project, whether it’s a feature film a commercial, or TV show, is a canvas where I infuse my vision, dedication, and storytelling prowess. As a storyteller, my writing delves deep into the human experience, exploring themes that resonate with authenticity and emotion. Every script penned is a labor of love, crafted to evoke a range of feelings and spark meaningful dialogues. Through my work and art, I aim not only to entertain but also to challenge perspectives and contribute to a richer tapestry of narratives in the cinematic realm.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Oh man! Rebel without a Crew” by Robert Rodriguez is a cult favorite in my library, a true gem that chronicles Rodriguez’s audacious journey crafting his debut feature with grit and guerilla filmmaking tactics, all while battling the constraints of a shoestring budget. It’s incredibly inspiring read and a testament to the fact that creativity knows no bounds.
