Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Bhatia.
Hi Alisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, my mom encouraged me to pursue law or medicine, as she wanted more for my future since she was a teenage mom. I went with medicine but intuitively knew that a white coat with a prescription pad wasn’t the path for me.
I didn’t know what else to look into at the time, in 2000, but luckily, in an “Intro To Pre-Med” class at Portland State University, a Naturopathic Doctor came, brought the class herbal tea, and told us about the principles of natural medicine, and it was love at first sight!
24 years later, I’m celebrating 13 years in this profession.
After years of being in my career and realizing I would have never known about it unless the ND came to my class, I’ve tried to find her. I’m still on the lookout to tell her thank you so much for making a difference in my life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My current challenge is that my husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years. We’ve had a couple appointments with IVF doctors, which I would have never imagined myself doing if you would have asked me years prior if I would consider that.
Currently, we are holding off on IVF and hopeful that natural medicine and acupuncture will help us, but we will consider all options for parenthood.
I had put off becoming a mom to get my career in medicine started, and I believed I would have no problem conceiving due to my grandmother having children at 40, 42, and 43 back in the mid-1960s. I had also live a healthy lifestyle, so having fertility challenges was difficult diagnosis to get, with dimished ovarian reserve, which is common when over 40.
Many tears have been shed, but I hope the silver lining is that in my process of being a patient, this will help me become a better doctor.
I think all challenges, while they are painful in the moment, give us a great opportunity to grow on many levels: mind, body, and spirit.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
