Conversations with Bryce Fleming

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryce Fleming.

Bryce Fleming

Hi Bryce, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Bryce Fleming, and I’m a 19-year-old artist from Orange County, California. My dad was a trumpet player, so I grew up around music. I began singing and playing piano and guitar very young, I’d say around the age of 6, then found my passion for songwriting not too long after. I write and perform all types of music and have found my passion through pursuing a blend of my favorite sounds: funk, soul, R’B, rock, and modern-day songwriting. As a soulful artist, producer, performer, and musician, I have been pushing the boundaries of intertwining genres and sounds to create my own. Although I have been writing my whole life and found a new love for being in the studio, my true love lies in performing. I have been on the stage in my hometown since I was 8 years old and have now crossed over to hitting new stages in Los Angeles. I am a Music Industry student at UCLA, which is where I met the current members of my band, production team, and industry peers. My new single comes out on April 26th along with more music coming out in early summer, as well as very exciting content and shows in the works! Stay tuned.

Aside from music, I grew up in a very active environment between sports and the outdoors. I was exposed to scuba diving, backpacking, snowboarding, over-landing, mountain biking, and sailing from a young age, and also played Ice Hockey almost all my life. These hobbies introduced me to my passion for the environment and the world, and I still pursue them now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think although I have continued to stay proactive and chase my dream as a musician, songwriter, and performer, I think every artist struggles with their sound and who they want to become. I have experienced working with manipulating and complicated people in the past, and although I had my father and peers around me looking out for my well-being and the protection of my music, those experiences at a young age gave me a lot of perspectives and taught me to keep my eyes on what I needed for myself and my craft. As an artist who loves to experiment with my music, navigating a path that allows me to do so has been a struggle. I think the uncertainty of direction kept me from pursuing a lot of potential success and confidence. With social media, talented peers, and getting caught up on the business, my artistry has been a challenging road to navigate and is something I’m still working on.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a soul artist in Los Angeles currently studying Music Industry at UCLA. I have been singing, writing, performing, and playing guitar and piano since a young age. I have found a passion for old soul and old classic-rock vocal techniques, appealing to music in the 70s with a modern feel. I am an artist who loves all genres and experiments with a variety of sounds. Although I am pursuing live, soulful music, I won’t limit myself to just that sound and plan to intertwine rock, pop, country, and hip-hop into my music as I continue my career. I pride myself in my ability to pursue and experiment with this concept and my confidence to lead my music this way. Although music is about evolving and re-branding as an artist, I believe my strong voice on wanting to push the boundaries of genres and styles sets me apart because my intention isn’t to follow the industry standards; it is to ensure creativity is never put into a box and to encourage the idea that all music is interconnected.

I think my biggest accomplishment will be my upcoming single, “Summer Rain,” which comes out on April 26th! This song challenged me in such multiple ways and is a representation of my crossover between old soul, R&B/Pop vocals, and rock guitar inspirations. I learned what goes into the effort put into production, set up, and studio sessions. Arranging and recording this song with a live band was a new experience for me and put in perspective how many possibilities there are to explore around one idea. I gained so much experience producing, composing, arranging, and performing, as well as balancing marketing, schedules, content, promotion, and budgeting. The most exciting show I’ve done used to be my National Anthem performance at the Angels Stadium years ago, but is now my show at the Nimoy Theater in Westwood this past week. We competed for a chance to open for a headlining artist at Royce Hall in May, and we won. It was an exhilarating feeling and has led my band and me to such a great and big opportunity.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Performing! I love learning and growing with musicians around me and believe that is where the heart and soul are. It’s an environment to innovate and connect to the passion. I also think it is the most intimate way to move people with your music and connect to them face to face. Aside from music, exploring nature makes me happy. The ocean, the mountains, and the snow are places I get to explore and connect with that side of myself. Scuba diving, hiking/backpacking, snowboarding, getting on the road, and getting on the ice to play hockey are all things that make me happy. I love spending time with my family, and my friends cause they do connect me to my home and the best parts of me.
