Rising Stars: Meet Urmee Saiya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Urmee Saiya.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started? 
Hey everyone! This is Urmee Saiya. I’m a writer and director from India, currently based in LA. As a creative, I think my journey to where I am today started in my formative years. I always had an inclination towards the arts. My family, also being artistically inclined, further propelled me in this direction. Being an introvert, I found storytelling as a way to express myself. It feels cathartic to be able to put my thoughts onto paper and then onto the screen. Seeing my vision come to life is so fulfilling, making me want to push boundaries and work harder to create something new and exciting. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The film, rather the entertainment industry, is very male-dominated, and navigating it can be an uphill battle. Unequal pay, limited opportunities, undervalued contribution are some of the challenges faced. As a woman, our skills, knowledge, and expertise is questioned. Despite these challenges, pushing through these systemic barriers, keep working hard, and remaining persistent is the key.

As a director and writer who finds enchantment in the ordinary moments of life, I am drawn to the subtle beauty and inherent magic that exists within the mundane. I believe in capturing the essence of human existence, unveiling the extraordinary within the ordinary. I strive to infuse my storytelling with authenticity and depth, inviting audiences to see the world through a new perspective. Embracing the simplicity and complexity of life’s intricacies, the profound beauty found in the simplicity of human relationships. I am captivated by the intricate dynamics and subtle nuances that define our connections with one another. Through my storytelling, I endeavor to explore the depth of emotions and the richness of experiences that arise from these everyday interactions. I strive to capture the essence of love, friendship, and kinship that form the heart and soul of our lives. In a world often consumed by grand gestures and flashy displays, I am dedicated to celebrating the quiet yet profound joys that stem from the simple relationships that enrich our existence. 

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
As a writer and director, the COVID-19 crisis taught me many important lessons, such as adaptability; with remote filming and new production methods, and flexibility became key. Resilience was another important lesson for overcoming personal and professional setbacks. My approach to storytelling as a writer and director solidified during Covid, as it made me realize the beauty of the mundane, the intricacies of relationships, making the ordinary extraordinary.
