Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Crowell.
Hi Thomas, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My music journey began back in high school. I was introduced to dubstep with Skrillex’s Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP, and Excision’s yearly Shambala Festival Mixes. It honestly took me a bit to grasp dubstep because the format and everything was very new to me as I grew up listening to rock and hip hop. Over time, I started to appreciate it more and more because of the unique sounds and very interesting song formats.
My Dad took me to my first EDC festival in Las Vegas back in 2014, it was a new experience for both of us and was life changing. I knew at that moment that creating EDM music and performing at EDC festivals and concerts was something I would pursue.
I dedicated much time into my craft, learning the fundamentals of sound design, mixing & mastering, and music production.
A few years ago, I took a deep dive into learning the fundamentals of digital marketing and social media strategy, which has helped contribute to my overall growth.
Overall, I would say I have just now broken through and am seeing organic results. My growth may be slow at the moment, but it is steady and authentic. What I am most happy about is seeing how my music brings joy, happiness, and excitement to others.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been an interesting journey, I will say. Considering that I am completely self-taught in all aspects yielded great results in some aspects and challenges in others. One of the biggest challenges for me is that I did not have a mentor or teacher who I could readily ask questions and learn things from. I had to seek out answers on my own, and part of that was learning what kinds of questions to ask. Some of my artist colleagues who may be further along in their journeys did help me and give me insight which I am grateful for.
Learning music production was a journey in itself, learning the structure and formats of songs and being able to put together a piece that flows and has variation. Mixing and mastering was another aspect which took time to learn as well, because the clarity and quality of your audio plays a big role into the appeal of your song.
One of the struggles I have recently dealt with now that I have started to see my following grow is the fluctuation of it. I will see my followers on social media and monthly listeners fluxuate, sometimes small and sometimes drastically. I felt worried that I needed to keep pushing content out just to “stay relevant,” but I realize now that fluctuation is naturally a part of the journey. From this, I learned to not care how the numbers change but to keep consistently going at my own pace and put out the best content I can in my own timing. I realize that by doing that, I will attract an audience who is more genuinely interested in me as an artist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The unique character that I am, “Mystic Wonder,” is fascinating and interesting in itself. I am a Dubstep Artist who creates all kinds of unique bass music, from heavy and energetic to melodic. I will occasionally step into other related bass music genres, such as Drum & Bass or even some festival-like music, but I anchor myself in Dubstep.
My Branding and Story is what makes me unique as a Dubstep Artist:
“I Am Mystic Wonder, the Sorcerer of Heavy Bass Music. As a Mystic, my Superpower is Sound Design, and I express that within my music. I like to think of playing my music as “Casting Spells.”
I am most proud of the fact I am self-taught. Watching YouTube and masterclasses, as well as putting in my 10,000 hours of experimentation, has brought me to this point where I have a solid understanding of music production, sound design, and mixing & mastering. Learning these fundamentals is helpful because it allows me more freedom and flexibility in my creation process, allowing me to create very specific original ideas I may think of or even manipulate samples into completely new creations. Whether it’s original creation or resampling processes, I fuse both together to create unique masterpieces.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
For one, I certainly see certain niche subgenres within EDM becoming more popular. I also see EDM music becoming even more globally recognized, which it already is.
I would say the scene has grown so massive to where whole ecosystems are now stemming from it. There are more EDM shows than ever happening very frequently of all sizes. We now have many massive festivals happening year-round, as well as smaller, intimate local shows where substantial audiences will attend regularly.
Attention spans are much shorter, which will result in shorter songs in some cases. Most EDM songs traditionally have 2 drops, but in some instances, I could see the trend shifting to songs having just one drop or an extended 1st drop followed by an outro.
Ultimately, we are going to see the boundaries of genres slowly fade away. Yes, there will be some songs and artists who stay within one framework or genre, but I foresee that some artists (including myself) will be producing multiple different genres. The key here is that these artists who have developed a unique sound for themselves will utilize that to stay consistent even while branching off into other genres.
