Meet Lynn Marran of Yorba Linda Optometry and Beyond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn Marran.

As an eye care specialist, a clinical scientist, an educator and a mother, Dr. Marran O.D. Ph.D., has opened a new practice in Yorba Linda to share her expertise and passion for preventative and therapeutic vision care.

Dr. Marran earned her Optometry degree in 1999 from UC Berkeley after completing her Ph.D., also at UCB, specializing in how the eye focuses and in how they can prevent children from becoming nearsighted. As early as 1975, Dr. Marran began her research on external, non-genetic influences on myopia development and on methods to control its progression. She has made significant advances in this and other fields of clinical eye research and has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles in leading optometric journals.

Dr. Marran is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and an Associate of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. She served as an Associate Professor in the Binocular Vision/Vision Therapy and Pediatric clinics at SCCO for 6 years before becoming a mother and research consultant to both Start-ups and large corporations developing ophthalmic medical devices.

She has her own non- profit organization, Children in Focus, to screen and treat children for functional vision problems that can interfere with learning. Over 30 optometry students have participated in training to detect these problems and over 400 children have benefited from the program. Dr. Marran also volunteers at local schools and shelters through Vision for Life and the Illuminations Foundation to provide eye care for the needy.

Despite all the letters after her name, Dr. Marran is a very down to earth, caring clinician. As you can see from the Patient Testimonials page, she has changed lives of both children and adults by making a deep personal connection with each and every one and by providing highly individualized Vision Therapy to help them overcome their limitations.

Has it been a smooth road?
My ideas were ahead of their time. As a 10-year-old child I believed nearsightedness was caused by factors other than genetics. As a student at Hampshire College in 1975, I began to explore this. As a graduate student in 1985 I undertook research in animals demonstrating it. In 1990, at UC Berkeley, I proposed a research project to explore this in children. I was turned down only to see the same person who turned me down take it up 10 years later.

Today, preventing nearsightedness is becoming standard of care. I am glad I was in on the ground level but wished it could have happened 30 years ago when we knew it was more than a genetic condition!

I opened my Optometry practice because I wanted to provide preventative options to patients who were nearsighted. I also wanted to provide vision therapy for children struggling in school with treatable conditions such as eye tracking or vision processing problems. Until then I had only practiced optometry as a clinical professor. It has been quite a challenge to step down from the proverbial ivory tower of academia to provide services to people and try to go broke doing it.

I have followed my passion all my life. I adopted a 5 and 6-year-old from St Petersburg Russia. They are now beautiful compassionate young adults. It has not been easy but I know I have contributed to making this a better world, one child and one research project at a time

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Yorba Linda Optometry and Beyond story. Tell us more about the business.
Vision Therapy for adults and children. I work with older adults who have been told they will never see depth. I work with children whose parents have been told they need surgery for the eye turn.

Myopia control. I use a variety of methods to control the progression of nearsightedness from specialized soft contact lenses (I wrote the FDA for Cooper Vision for similarly designed lenses currently selling in Asia and Canada). I also use low dose atropine. And if a parent wants to try a non-proven method, I use vision therapy which can work for the right child and family.

Pricing:

  • Evaluation for eye tracking, eye focusing, and eye teaming that can be the cause of a child’s behavior and/or difficulty in school $150
  • Vision Therapy 1 hour session with Dr. Marran O.D. Ph.D $125
