Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivan Yongqi Liu.

Ivan Yongqi Liu

Hi Ivan, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My journey into photography began in my childhood when my father worked part-time in a local photo studio. In my memory, he always carried an old film camera and captured the moments of our lives, which led to my early interest in photography. Though I didn’t formally study photography in university, this familial influence sparked a deep-rooted passion within me.

Upon moving to New York City, I stepped into the world of fashion photography by working at New York Fashion Week as a photographer. It was here that I first captured moments of backstage, first looks, and runway shows. Collaborating with stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, and models whom I met during this time, I began creating my first editorials, and then the second, the third, until today. Each unique project fueled my creativity, leading to subsequent opportunities. I am very grateful for the journey thus far and remain committed to pushing the boundaries of my artistry in fashion photography.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not. When I first moved to New York, I hardly knew anyone in the city. Since I hadn’t attended an art school to pursue a photography degree, I needed to put in extra effort to hone my photography skills and establish connections within the industry. Fortunately, I crossed paths with designer Carlos Campos and his team at his show during NYFW Mensweek. This encounter opened doors for me, providing more opportunities to work within the industry and take on new challenges.

We’ve been impressed with Studio 242, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After working with magazines like Harper’s BAZAAR, L’Officiel, and Glamour, featuring celebrities such as Maye Musk, Olivia Ponton, Asher Angel, and more. I am currently planning an upcoming studio named Studio 242 in Chelsea. The studio will offer cyc walls, gear and lighting equipment, props, and full-service production support. I’m excited to continue pushing creative boundaries in photography and look forward to collaborating with more talented individuals and discovering innovation through the lens.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most crucial lesson I’ve learned is to never stop learning and to appreciate the importance of teamwork. Each person’s contribution matters and collaboration is essential for success.
